Am i cheap or vette picky?

My new 08 gmc sierra needed an oil change! So i carefully drained my vette oil with 60 % on the oil change indicator into a clean pail and put new oil into my vette [mobil 1 of course]. I then put the used oil into my truck with a new gm filter and topped of with new oil! Looks good! Now i have new oil in the vette and a good change in the truck ! When my pontiac vibe needs a change in about 2,000 miles i'll do the same for it with the vette oil. Keep in mind i have a hoist and got lots of time to kill! I always reset the vette oil meter and always put a new filter on. My buddies think i'm going overboard but it's funny when were in the shop drinking beer they borrow my hoist and are now doing the same to there trucks. We must have the cleanest vette oil around or maybe it gives us a reason to go to the shop and drink!!!

that's my new gmc sierra above my vette in avatar!

I would go with cheap..... but hey, if you have the time to sit and figure out wich vehicle is due based on your method, go for it!

dpigguy 12-28-2008 09:35 PM

how about a little of both? :D

I would be afraid of contamination in the truck and would probably filter the oil I drained out of the Vetter before using it. Then again, it depends on what service the truck in being used in and the types of driving, etc you do. If you would use regular oil in the truck vs. Mobil 1, it might be interesting to look at the economics of doing changes as you describe vs. running the Vette to 20% and regular 6k changes in the Sierra.

I'd try it but my diesel doesn't run well with Mobil 1 in the crankcase!

definetively cheap, lol  i mean, theres nothing really wrong with what youre doing, its just a little unusual :smash:

Cheap for sure, doesn't your Sierra deserve the same respect as the vette ? now the Vibe that's another matter. :willy:

Oil Change

I change mine when the DIC reads 60% remaining also. It is still clean and clear. I put it back in the M1 containers and give it to the car wash man at a local body shop. He puts in his foreign car. He always offers to wash my truck for me. Everybody Wins!

You say the Sierra is 'new'. Are you possibly voiding its warranty because you cannot provide proof of oil changes under its service guidelines?

C5pilot 12-28-2008 09:46 PM

And on the international space station they can recycle their urine and drink it. Something tells me they still prefer tap water at home.

So why not just keep the oil in the Corvette until it reaches 0% and save even more money?

BTW, can I have your tires when they're at 60% tread? I'll even pay the shipping.

07silvervette17 12-28-2008 09:52 PM

Never thought of it that way but then again i keep oil receipts and could show them if needed! Just sold tires of my vette to another member from oklahoma and they were at 50% wear! I put new supercars on and intend to always change at 50% wear! Especially when you can get 150 for a used tire and replace with new from discount tire for 400. And have peice of mind!

mksz51 12-28-2008 09:59 PM

OK - what did the Sierra cost? And how many quarts of oil does it hold? Since you'd probably just use "conventional" oil at $2 a quart and maybe it holds 6 quarts you are "saving" $12 by using used oil in a new vehicle. Cheap - for sure. Foolish? Possibly.

I'd never do this.

I was told mobil 1 at 60% is better than conventional oil when new and remember mobil1 at wamart in canada is 12 bucks a quart plus 12% tax plus enviro fees plus pf48 filter $14.00 . total of 110.00 !
