diy harness bar...single alu bar enough?
I was looking at ecklers.com and came across a harness bar that consists of only one aluminum bar (I'm assuming it's solid):
http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...0&dept_id=1618 Instructions: http://www.ecklers.com/assets/pdf/45100.pdf? Is that sturdy enough? Has anyone made their own in a similar fashion (without the vertical supports)? http://www.ecklers.com/images/vette/45100.jpg |
I have the HARDBAR Harness bar and its One solid bar. No down supports. Nothing other then the Seatbelt Bolts! So it should be fine.

The one you saw on Eckler's site IS the HardBar from our buddy Gary Hoffman of www.HardBarUSA.com.
I have the HardBar too, and it is indeed a single 2-inch diameter aluminum bar. It's a sweet piece, and has been 'crash-tested' successfully in real track incidents more then a few times. . |
Buy the HardBar. You will save yourself many many head acks if you try to fabricate one.

I was going to attempt to make my own, but ulimately it wasn't worth the hassle. I eventually found a brand new R-D Racing Cross Bar on ebay for $100. :D

The Hardbar unit is not solid aluminum bar , it is a tube........If it were solid aluminum bar it would be as heavy as the RD crossbar that sperkins just bought. If I remember correctly the aluminum Hardbar is ~8 lbs. The RD monstrosity is~25lbs. Gary makes or did make real shiek carbon fiber harness bars that were~3lbs.

I made mine I used:
03-55300 4130 SHEET 6" X 12" X .125" $8.28 for the ends 03-10800-4 4130 STEEL TUBE 2X.065 4FT $26.40 for the bar Total cost was $50 ordered from aircraft spruce. It's gas welded together to federal aircraft spec. It only weights five pounds. Pay very close attention to mounting points and hardware. |
Get the Hardbar.

I'll jump in and say get the Harbar too. It's crash tested so you know it'll work
