1987 Callaway?
 

Hi Guys,

I not familiar at all with C4s, and neither is my coworker who just acquired a 1987 corvette coupe that was willed to him by his uncle. He is under the impression that it is a twin-turbo Callaway. He's also been told it is 100% all original. Here's the kicker: its an automatic. I've read that all Callaway's came as stick shift, which leads me to believe either:

a) This is not a Callaway
b) Its not all original, and someone made this into a Callaway-esque clone.

Could you guys fill me in on how we can tell if it is a Callaway (VIN, equipment, etc)? Thank you!

Ya that was the first place I went. Unfortunately, that doesn't give me any information to differentiate between a normal C4 and a Callaway.

Example, do all Callaway's have the two intake "scoops" on the hood? What other modifications were done to these corvettes that can identify it, by eye, as a Callaway?

Also, is there a way to find out if this was ordered from the dealership as RPO B2K?

Ya, I did stumble upon page: http://www.callawayownersgroup.com/Pages/Tips.htm I really don't want to bother contacting Callaway, and am hoping someone on the forum can give me some pointers. I mean thats why we have the forum, right?

I guess I am looking for more basic details since I am completely unfamiliar with C4s. Like the air ducts in the hood, was that a standard on all Callaways, both order optioned or direct conversions?

That website I listed says, "On the B2K engine, a unique series of numbers were stamped onto a pad on the block for identification." Is this the typical VIN pad on a 350?

Does the car have the Service Parts Identification sticker, sometimes called the RPO list, under the console lid??. If the car was ordered through a Chevy dealer, it will have B2K as one of the codes. That means the car was built and shipped to Callaway for the installation of the package and any Callaway-specific options.

Another way to tell is by ordering copies of the build sheet and window sticker from the National Corvette Museum at this page. The two documents are nice to have for for documenting the car as you get the list of options, the final dealer cost and the name of the dealer that it was shipped to.

The VIN pad is on the right front of the block like all SB Chevy motors. As far as the A4 tranny, it's entirely possible that the original 4+3 tranny had been replaced with an auto trans. The 4+3 can be hard to repair and the OD unit as a replacement is pricey by itself. But the RPO sticker will have the "Correct" code for the transmission that went into the car at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant.

There are some 87 Callaway owners on the forum. You can send a PM to forum member TAC to get some information. He has one of the '87 Callaway 'verts.

I'm pretty sure Callaway twin turbos came in automatics. For a turbo, an auto can be more desireable.

I hope this will help - obviously, the #1 resource is the www.callawayownersgroup.com site - Here is what you could find there:

• Two 1987 Callaways were automatics. They were both late 87 cars.
• On the SPI Label in the glovebox, most have B2K in the sequence of alpha-numeric RPO codes.
• You will not be able to see the # stamping on an 87 without moving the AC out of the way
• All but one, maybe two Callaways have triangle NACA Ducts in the hood. One of the automatic 1987s had a flat hood.
• Flat hoods were still ducted. Just done so underneath, completely.

Ya, this is pretty funny. I'll just start by saying it is NOT a Callaway. This coworker knows nothing of corvettes. This is how it all happened. I asked him to snap some pictures yesterday and bring them in today. So he did, obviously the main picture I wanted to see was under the hood. One quick glance, no twin turbos, a completely stock C4, abeit in gorgeous condition.

So I ask, "why did you think this was a Callaway?" To which he passes me a detailed option list that list every option that was available on a 1987. He points out that the Callaway option had been highlighted in blue (with about 6 or 7 other options) and all the rest were highlighted in red. Of course, his uncle highlighted the options his car had in red, though this guy's mind processes blue = yes, red = no. Though you would think him seeing "coupe" in red and "convertible" in blue would've helped him put two and two together there.

Like I said, there is one 1987 with a flat hood an automatic... It's out there :thumbs:

That would've been amazing, but I'll let you know now, my luck is not that good to wind up with a one-over car.
