Getting closer (Wheels are back from powdercoating, reflectors blacked out)

My wheels just got back from Mike' (Corvette Pilot on this forum) powdercoating service and I wanted to share with you what a GREAT DEAL having work done by him is. I was familiar with his service since he did my brake calipers a year ago (see picture below), but what I didn't expect was that having him powdercoat my wheels was actually cheaper than getting it done anywhere local here in NJ/PA/NY, despite the shipping.
I asked Mike for a glossy black that matches my car's factory color. These are stock Front C6 factory rims, and 2 of them have been widened by Weldcraft Wheels in Michigan to 18 x 11":

I will be running these tires in the wide rims: 305 35 18

The black wheels will match my black C6 with smoked lights and reflectors:

So now I've got the rear tires, all 4 rims, and tire pressure sensors; I still need the front tires, and I am putting C6 logos on the center caps.
I am also planning on a thin red lip around the edge of the wheels, matching the brake calipers, and also 2 red decals on the sides of the hood, to break up the black a bit...

What do you think? Keep the wheels all black, or have the thin red lip painted around the edge?

If it were me I'd keep them all black. Should be a nice setup when done! Agressive but still the sleeper look for the untrained eye!

Personally I think all black wheels look like wheels missing hubcaps. I think you need something to break it up a bit. Perhaps the C6 flag for the center caps will be enough. See how that looks first and then decide on the stripe.

A trick I did was to paint the rotor hubs a bright silver/chrome color. They match the color of the rotor face and they make the black wheels stand out more now. I'll get pics tomorrow.

I have a similar setup as you do. Blacked out lights etc. and Im actually going to leave the lip chrome to break up the black and still keep a little shine in the car. As far as decals on the hood leave the stuff off. It looks so much better all sleak.

I'm just trying to get a little something to differentiate it from all the other black C6's on the road; I see one, some times two a day. I am going to a race / car show, and there are FOUR black C6s at that race; one turbo, two supercharged (mine included) and one N/A... I really like the stock look, but for the show, it'll be really hard to tell them apart if I don't do something, and this is an event I would like to win :) I got two hood stripes similar to these, but ending at the hood instead of extending into the bumper:

I figured it'd be a good idea for the car show and since it is just $30 worth of Vynil I can always power wash them off afterwards if I get tired of the look :)

I also got the fender stripes, for both fenders, but have not decided if I want to run them or not.. What do you guys think?

For Me, visually, its hard to accept a totally one color anything...So I vote thin lip on the wheels, otherwise the whole area of the wheel is all hollow looking, and either one or the other on the stripes.

Do you have any closeups of how the weld looks from the inside after the powdercoating?

No, I do not. But I will take a picture when I get home today
It is pretty discrete. You'd have to know what you were looking for to spot that once the wheels have tires on them and they are mounted on the car since the welds are behind the brake rotors and painted over...

LS2-Zomb!e 03-10-2009 12:57 PM

All black..

I like black wheels on a black car if the offset and stance is right. However, they can lack definition without a stripe to set them off from the rest of the car so I vote black with a red stripe.

johnodrake 03-10-2009 02:08 PM

Badass car, Sam!

///DarkSide\\\ 03-10-2009 02:52 PM

All BLACK

The calipers red will be just enough to set it off.

Ragtop 99 03-10-2009 03:08 PM

Skip the red stripes on the wheels and on the fenders. I like Corvette flags idea for the hubcaps.

I just got my wheels powdercoated locally. I think they look like crap...I wish I had gone with Mike instead. They are gloss black, I also got my calipers powdercoated red. I will post pics later when I get the car back together. I also painted my rotors bright silver.

bad2000z 03-10-2009 06:32 PM

BTW, I like the fender stripes. No stripes on the wheels though.

You can sandblast them and re-powdercoat them... Or Mike can do it for you ;) Can I see some pictures?

Love the finish on the wheels, but you're right they lack something!!!!
I just bought a set of 18 from Aintqk(rj) to widen, can you pm me with the details and cost??
