1978 steering column fit a 1976?

Will a 1978 tilt steering column fit a 1976? Thanks

Yes, but it does require cutting back on the plastic shroud that reaches toward the dash. Take a look at this paper:

I have been waiting for someone to report with pictures that they have been successfull. By the same token, I am sure that others would have thrown rocks at me if my dimensions weren't correct.

Jim, I am sorry this project has taken a back seat to the FI system and may not get done until the fall. Other "house" projects have also come into play. :(

Are electrical connections different between '76 and '78? I thought the '78 had the headlight dim/dip switch on the indicator stalk. The '76 is on the floor.

Here is a pic of the standard column from the 72 and a 79 column that has been trimmed according to Jim's instructions.

These pics show the difference between the standard and tilt/tele wheel installed in the car. Huge difference in driving comfort.

You can either leave the floor switch as it is or extend the wiring and plug into the column. The connector is the same for both switches.

I will be extending mine to the column. I am looking forward to not having the column in my lap and further away.

I got to get working on mine. I have it all apart and painted just need to reassemble it.
