Decisions, decisions: E-Tec or AFR Heads?
 

I've been leaning toward the Air Flow Research heads for our 72 small block rebuild. The folks at Air Flow have been really helpful, but with additional machining (to 64cc) they are going to cost close to $1500. Ouch!

I was talking to a machinist last night, and he told me he really likes the Edelbrock E-Tec heads, which already have 64cc heads and cost about $300 less.

Has anybody used the E-Tecs? What do you think?

I'd also be interested in opinions from anybody who has used the AFR heads.

I don't know anyone running them, but if they are as advertised they ought to be a real kick-arse product.
E-Tecs are pretty new heads, they come in two varieties. The E-Tec 170 and the E-Tec 200. The 170's are comparable to Chevy Vortec heads which are cast iron versions of Fastburn heads. The 170's are supposed to outflow Vortecs or Fastburn heads. The 200's have larger valves and 200cc runners and will really suck some air through your engine. The only thing I'm not sure about is if they will work with non-Vortec manifolds. I thing that I read that they can use either stock or Vortec manifolds.
The Vortecs are great Cast Iron heads, the E-Tecs being virtual copies of them in Aluminum are probably really good heads for the money.

Please keep us informed as to what you end up doing, I definately want to know as I am busy saving my pennies, for heads, headers and sidepipes. got nowhere with my sympathy fund for me to buy these last week, :lol:

The 200's are pretty good heads.

But will the 200's or for that matter the 170's fit on a non vortec sb, or does he need to buy a vortec intake to go with it.?

I've always wondered about e-tech. They must be good. I would do it . Monty went 18 degree Darts, I went Dart pro 1's You have to plan on future mods and not have to worry about getting bigger better later.

The rule is: better flowing heads require less cam to make the same HP.

Do Etech heads come with 2.055 intakes or is that an option?
