How do you switch out the main board on a gadge cluster

I'm getting ready to install HUD in my 98- does anyone have instructions on swapping out the main board of the cluster. I have the post on installing the Hud but it does not tell you how to change the main board

Thanks in advance for any advice
Martin

Me too..................:lurk:

I was told its some computer....... Is it that silver thing in the back on the newer cluster that says high voltage????

dgrant3830 05-29-2009 11:28 PM

That silver thing that says High Power on it is in fact, the high voltage power supply for the side lamps that provide the background illumination. Best to stay out of it. Forum member Tstar has a nice picture of the IP Cluster with all the circuits on it.

tstar 05-30-2009 04:15 AM

Here ya go Dave. The silver box is indeed the power supply for the UV tubes, note the Blue and Gray wires coming out of it to the UV tubes;

Here's the inside of the power supply in case your curious, it said don't open it so I had to! :lol:;

Here's the flex board behind the mother board, I don't have a pic of the mother board but it's easy to take out once you remove the UV power supply and the white back cover;

Where did you find a mother board with the HUD connector?

Tim

Thanks Tim. For whomever, I happen to have an extra IP Cluster with the HUD connector out of a '99 that I bought off the auction site. I never installed it so I really don't know if it works or not, but assume it does. I got it for the HV power supply just in case since GM doesn't sell it.

buoniconti81 06-01-2009 11:25 PM

I have a 2001 hud enabled cluster complete... but I have a 1998 corvette.... My question is if I switch out the motherboard will it show the mileage of the 2001.. someone added to swap the computer out?????

Where is this computer? or is it the mother board and is it and easy swap to do if you have a hud enabled car?

I have had cluster problems too. I just don't have the money right now to mess with it. My DIC doesn't work at all. I'm wondering if one of those boards is bad.

dgrant3830 06-02-2009 12:24 AM

The mileage is stored in the IP Cluster. One of the IC's. If you swap out the cluster, it will show the mileage of whatever car it was from therefore the need to update it correctly to avoid legal problems in the future.

No lights either? Perhaps the connector has worked loose on the back of it. It costs nothing but time to remove the IPC and check it, here's some great instructions;

:iagree: Only a Tech II can adjust the mileage and possibly let the BCM know it has a new playmate to talk to (I'm not 100% sure if the new IPC would have to be married to the BCM or not).

If your DIC has stopped working, it is the small green circuit board in the last of the above pictures (lower left corner).. This also stores your mileage information.

If you replace this circuit board, whatever mileage is in the replacement board is what your DIC will now display.

Hmmm not that's some juicy info right there!!!!

Many thanx for posting that! :thumbs:

anyway we can hook up some wires to the cluster to maybe a battery pack to see the mileage on the guage before we dismantle the dash?

chevy406 06-03-2009 09:52 AM

I bought a Z06 instrument cluster and HUD projector for a forum member, and installed it in my '99 FRC. When I had the two instrument clusters side by side on my work bench, I disassembled them both and swapped the odometers so that the Z06 cluster would show the correct mileage for my '99. The 8,900 mile Z06 odometer just didn't feel right in my 171,000 mile car :blueangel:
It isn't too hard a process, and does not require any soldering or wire cutting. I pretty much just figured it out as I was going. I didn't take any pictures at the time, but since I still have the '99 cluster (with the Z06 odometer installed), I might be talked into disassembling it again for some pictures...

can you still drive the car with a whole different mileage on it after the change?????

buoniconti81 06-04-2009 02:40 PM

does anyone have extra rubber expansion nuts for the hud install, or does anyone have a better idea. as to install the hud projector?

Incorrect. The mileage is on an easily changed chip. It's pretty easy to desolder & reprogram with the right tools

(Which I happen to have:) )

Yes. No reason you can't drive it.. but legally and technically you should get the mileage fixed to match the old cluster. I have the equipment to do it but am not a vendor.

I've tried bench testing one and got nowhere, well I did get the needles to sweep but that was it... Perhaps schpenxel knows how, he seems extremely knowledgable on the IPC.

Do u know if u can get a replacement board to swap out? What about adjusting the mileage? The DIC switch lights up but does'nt work. What about getting a used cluster and just swapping out those boards.
