wheel widening

Has anyone here ever had aluminum wheels widened? What was your experience with this? How much did it cost and who did the work? Are widened wheels sufficently strong?

schpenxel 07-09-2009 10:08 PM

Why would you do that?

If for example you want to put a specific style of wheel on your car, and it doesn't come in the width you need. If its not a custom wheel, you can't get any size under the sun.

I had aset of 10" s made into 12"s by Weldcraft wheels in Plymouth MI and they are great. Better balance now than before and I think the cost was around $100.00 per wheel. I would highly recommend them to you and this is from an ex Toronto guy.. cheers eh

Let's keep this thread alive a little longer...

Weldcraft Wheels

They do top quality work. I believe they are at approx. $125 wheel now.

James @ Weldcraft is quoting $240/wheel these days. That's a fairly nice chunk of change. If the vision you have for your car demands a wheel style/size that doesnt exist, it miiiiiight be worth it. But for that kind of scratch, it better be perfect. Has anyone had any negative experiences with wheel widening/welding? balancing/run out issues?

Its_Go_Time 07-12-2009 11:48 AM

Not too many people have done this, I guess.

ZO6 OEM Wheels widened to 12" with 345/30/18 are one of the best option IF not the best...

Problem is to find 345/30/18 since Michelin stopped the production...

ZO6 OEM Wheels widened to 12" with 345/35/18 are an even better option!! 27.5" tire height looks real sweet on a C5. But again, unless you live in Europe or have a rich sugar mommy, tires are un-available. I'm leaning towards widened 19" ZO6 reproductions with 345/30-19s.
I like cars that have a clean un-molested OEM look, but actually have been quite seriously molested. :D

Sorry, meant to write $225. I guess James has increased his pricing to $240 now.

Add the cost of wheels and CCW's may be the answer.

If you just want 18 x12's for the rear and use 10.5"s for the front then Weldcraft may be the answer if you use ZO6 Speedlines or Alcoa's.

I have had mine (18 x 12 Speedlines) for over a year and no issues.

Silly question...but can you see the welds inside the rim if to kneel down and look in. The insides usually turn black with brake dust, which should help to obscure the beads...

Its_Go_Time 07-13-2009 04:33 PM

Off topic.

Hey Miami...what kind of front fascia are you using. Looks very nice. I'm not really into those kind of mods, but yours is really sweet.

Very faintly but you can. I have seen some cars in person actually at the track friday he had some 18x13 rear z06s i could see the weld and they were covered in brake dust.

Sorry folks I was out of the country the last few days. I had Cragar "SS" rims made then widened to 12" and they have been great. Running MT DRs 345/35/18 and love the traction. It has been 4-5 years since I had them done so I guess the price has gone up. I really had no option as I wanted these rims and needed the wideth due to the blown 427 . Still would recommend Weldcraft. cheers
