1970 4 speed lock out cable help

I am missing the cable that goes from the steering column under the hood to the transmission. 4 speed, original tranny.. I need to buy the cable, but need to know how it attaches to the tranny and column so i can start a parts search. Anyone have a picture, diagram, or list of whats needed? Presently i have a small wire holding the arm in place by wrapping it around the master cylinder..
Thanks!!

This would be a good way to lock your column out secretly if you have a TKO. No place to bolt this up anyways.

This is cool. Does anyone know if a T-5 or anything else could do this? Did this feature go away in '77?

It is a regular washer and cotter pin that retains the cable to the reverse lever. There should be a post at the top of the reverse lever that the end of the cable slides on. That is then held on with a washer and then the cotter pin. The connection at the other end is the same.

what does this cable actually do?

does it prevent the column from locking unless the transmission is in reverse?

Prevents you from being able to remove the key unless the transmission is in reverse.

Poor feature IMO.

Oh, I thought it locked the tranny with the key out. If that's what it does, I don't really want it anymore...lol :willy:

The steering column/transmission shift interlock system did the following:
It did lock the transmission shifter.
It did prevent you from locking your steering wheel if the car was moving forward.

This cable and lockout feature was eliminated on Corvettes starting in 1977 with the introduction of the "finger inhibitor" lever right next to the ignition lock cylinder and key. Federal law only said that you had to lock the shifter OR lock the steering wheel. You really weren't required to lock both functions. So starting in 1977 the interlock system was eliminated on Corvettes. You were only required to move the inhibitor lever with your finger so that you could rotate your ignition key from OFF to the OFF-LOCK position. In the OFF-LOCK position you locked the steering wheel. The shifter lever no longer was locked.

I agree, I wonder how many of these out there still work?

Mine works. If you don't install the cable, you have to do something about the lever on the steering column to prevent it from falling while the car is moving.

I don't think mine still even has the lever.

Reverse lock out

I am using a Hurst shifter in my 70 and would like to disable the reverse lock out. Any suggestions for a quick and easy way?? The cable is history - gone!

Alan 71 09-17-2014 03:20 PM

Hi BC,
The use of a Hurst shifter doesn't mean the lock-out still can't operate normally.
But, if you want to disable it you can remove the cable connection at the transmission end of it and also up at the lever on the steering column.
Since your cable is gone you'll have it easy.
You'l onlyl need to keep the lever on the column in the 'Up' position by some means. Some people just use a piece of soft wire.
Regards,
Alan
