The most amazing car sound EVER

I'm sure a lot of you have seen this vid or vids about this car:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0M73wYuD6k

Ok. So. How do I make my Z06 sound like this?

Here are my not-very-knowledgable theories about why this car sounds like that:

Theory #1: 10k RPM + V12?
Does the cylinder ignition sequence of a V12 have a significant effect on the exhaust note of a car, as compared to 8? I've heard other 9k and 10k RPM cars and they don't sound like this, they don't sound ANYTHING like this. I've heard 7k RPM V12s (BMWs, MBs) and they don't sound like this either.

Theory #2: Straight pipes?

Theory #3: This occurred to me recently -- is it the TRANSMISSION making that noise? Square cut gears?

To mechanic and acoustic experts out there I beg for enlightenment. I have watched this vid and every other vid about this car a hundred times and the sound of it still blows me away just as much as the first time I heard it ... There have been a lot of threads here about the sounds of cars, and I agree that various P-cars (like the CGT) F-cars and L-cars and even McLarens sound very, very, very good .... but nothing .... nothing comes remotely close to the symphony scream emitted by this magic music machine.

seriously?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news buddy but the Vette is never going to sound like that. I'm not even going to begin explaining why as there are way too many variables. Some of which you've already listed.

OneBadZ06 09-04-2009 08:30 AM

I'll stick with my Supercharged Z06 with Borla exhaust for sound, thanks. ;)

Smaller pistons and higher RPM. It is easy if that is what you want.

Jim

Ok so I should have been clearer in my post: I was just joking about trying to create a sound like that with a Z06.

I'm still curious about the variables, and if I'm missing something significant. Again, even the flagship MB 12 cyl motors like SLR don't sound anything like this.

So you're saying the transmission has nothing to do with it? I remember reading somewhere, wish I could remember where, that square cut gears are insanely loud compared to normal street car trannys.

The SLR has a supercharged V8.

novaz06 09-04-2009 10:29 AM

It does sound amazing. The reason is this: super short stroke, super high rpm. This motor makes max hp at 10500 rpm. The frequency of this sound is much higher than, say, an LS7. 10500 rpm x 12 cyl / 4 strokes = 31500 explosions/min vs. 14000 for an LS7 at 7k rpm. This gives it a very "angry," raspy sound like a swarm of hornets.

The tranny doesn't have anything to do with that sound, but it does sound amazing when shifting.

To make an LS7 sound like this it would have to rev to 15700rpm.

If you want to hear this taken to the extreme, try this (12 cyl 19000rpm): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBXUOomynxw

Given with respect to personal subjectivity... it sounds like a protracted, whiney, high-pitched child running about a school playground complaining about something, and whereof no substantive sound and/or chutzpah to be appreciated. Not impressive in the least bit, imo.

Doh! Right you are. MB does have 12s though, and they don't sound like this. CL65 and SL65 if memory serves ...

Zoxxo 09-04-2009 11:05 AM

Here's the "sound" I want (and I'm thinkin' that the tranny tunnel would *really* have a heat problem :willy:

http://www.greymatters.net/f1/F1_Engine.mpg

Btw, this is a 16 megabyte file so you dialup folks probably don't want to do this :)

You pull the american 7.0L out of the car - ship it to me for free. Heck - I'll even pay for the shipping. Install an Italian V12 - I'm sure just a little modificatioin will make it fit.

Then you will be close. Not sure what it will sound like having to go through long tube headers and the exhaust all the way to the back of the car but I would bet it would be closer than anything you can do with a V8.

g-townmach 09-04-2009 11:15 AM

little v10's and v12's with ALOT of rpm will always sound like that. please dont try to get your z to sound that exotic!

great vid. I'm a car guy so love this kind of stuff, even if it doesn't have a GM part #.

Everett Ogilvie 09-04-2009 11:41 AM

Amazing sound for sure! Since we are discussing the sound of cars on track, and likes/dislikes of the "exotic" sound vs. the big V8 sound, check this out;

Admittedly, this is a Porsche V8 - I could not find any in car of a DP with the GM engine.

square cut gears are much louder. they make a loud whining sound. almost like that of a supercharger but obviously different.

Joe_Planet 09-04-2009 12:08 PM

that sounded SERIOUSLY annoying.. why would you EVER want to have your car sound that high pitched and whiny... holy jesus mary and josef!

Oli1313 09-04-2009 03:09 PM

AMERICAN MUSCLE! :flag:
The Horse does sounds nice, but not into the artsy European exhaust.
