54 Trans Problem

My PG did not have a speedo gear when I purchased the car. Now I'm trying to install one and the speedo gear is at a 45 degree angle and will not mate with the speedo drive gear. My case number is 3702602. I believe someone installed a passenger car trans and installed the corvette tailhousing in the past. Are the trans cases the same between the passenger car and the vette? Maybe my output shaft is incorrect? Or maybe the sleeve that the drive gear is on is incorrect?

Has anyone experienced this before?

As always,

Thanks

Greg

The plastic gear should go in sideways. Not at an angle. If the body is on the frame, it's very difficult to hook up the speedo cable. It can be done but is not easy.

The trans is out of the car at the trans shop being rebuilt. These guys have experience with cast iron units but are stumped. When the speedo gear is installed into the case it does not mate with the drive gear properly. It is explained to me as mating at a 45 instead of a 90 degree angle.

Im stumped too, then. Can you post a pic of the tail shaft and gear assembly from the shop? I've converted many pass car PG to Corvette configuration. It's pretty straight forward. The gear is the same.

So why do you think the gear is going in at a 45 degree angle? The gear is in the case. Not the housing.

It makes no sense to me either. I'm going to the shop first thing in the morning. Is there a difference between a vette and a passenger car speedo gear?

Greg,

FYI, on a '54 PG trans, the speedo gear is inserted from the driver's side of the car and is horizontal when installed.

If your transmission is a real '54 transmission, then it takes a speedo gear assembly that looks like this (minus the worn teeth, of course):

The key thing about this assembly is that it isn't intended to come apart. The plastic gear is pressed on a steel shaft. To change the driven gear, you change the whole assembly.

Is this what you have or are you trying to install the later style of gear holder with a removable plastic gear and shaft? The two types are not interchangeable.

Jim

Same gear. The gear is not a factor in the conversion of a pass car tail shaft to a Corvette tail shaft. The end of the output shaft has a gear spline that interacts with the speedo gear.

Possibly, the speedo gear being used, is the issue.

That is exactly what I have. Is the corvette assembly shorter than the passenger car assembly?

Nope

I have converted many a trans and always use the same gear. It looks like the one shown by Jim.

What is the date of your transmission? Maybe you have a later model PG that may have a different type of gear, possibly noted by Jim.

Thanks All!

Does the speedo gear fit onto the output shaft below? Which in turn is contacted by the actual speedo gear assembly screwed into the case?

I don't understand , if the PG IS a corvette case and you have the correct planetary gear out put shaft like the one Mary shows that is the DRIVE gear and you have the correct DRIVEN gear assy that screws in that's shown it must be 90% Other wise your PG case is from mars , because as some one pointed out you can use a car PG and convert it to Corvette using the right parts . It's a no brainier. I would like to see pic's of what your seeing. :willy:

Your speedo gear meshes with the output shaft gear spline.

We need a pic of your speedo gear, tail shaft housing being used and output shaft.

Thats my whole problem Roy, I have not seen my problem yet. I've only had it explained to me by phone. I'll see what this mechanic is talking about first thing tomorrow. I just want to understand, because obviously the PG specialist I took it to does not.

I'll get pics and post tomorrow.

Thanks again

New picture this morning. This if of an original '54 Corvette PowerGlide. The speedo gear screws into the boss that is at the top, rear of the main case, just barely forward of the junction of the main case and the tail shaft housing. In this photo there is a cap over the speedo gear.

Does this look like your transmission, Greg?

Jim

Yes my trans looks just like that.

Please see the pics below.

The speedo gear assembly does not clear the output shaft retaining screw. Also; is there a very thin drive gear that slips on the output shaft to driveshaft slip yoke adapter? Does it appear that I have the correct parts?
