ebay x-pipe... worth messing with?

Just curious if anyone has installed one of those x-pipes from ebay that you have to weld in (the ones that are just the "x")?

Also, what size are the stock pipes on a 02 Coupe? 2.5"? 3.0"?

as soon as I get 220v power in my garage and can get my welder running, I am going to tackle this. no help right now though :leaving:

give it a try and let us know how it works

What are you expecting from this? Are looking to change the sound or improve performance? If sound, this may help some. If performance, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Sound is a major reason for this... I just put a SLP Loudmouth exhaust on and I not really liking the "motorboat" sound I am getting as well as the popping. I am hoping that putting an x-pipe on will get rid of these sounds (or at least reduce them).

Is there a performance issue with using something like this? Are the tight bends something that will reduce the current power? Or will I just not get any gains from this? I wouldn't expect much of a gain no matter what pipe I go with. Am I wrong in that assumption?

The X pipe design will have an impact on the performance gain/loss. By the provided photo the design of the one shown looks less than optimum to me, but I could be wrong. I'm basing this on visual comparisons to known good designs. By the photo it looks like the center area is too squared off, more like an H pipe shape than a smooth flowing X pipe. If the price is right it might be fun to try none the less.

Were you planning to tig or mig weld it?

its the same "X" as magnaflow so i dont see how it doesnt work as well

You can buy the C5 X pipe in the used parts section all the time. For the cost it's not worth the trouble to make one. The MagnaFlow X pipe is all stainless too.

I wouldn't try it.

Looks closer to the Bassani type which I have. If you have access to all that is needed for the swap, I'd say to go for it. It should help with the motorboat sound...

I have a borla x-pipe I'll sell ya for $75. All you have to do is cut off a section of your mid pipe and these clamp right on, and have the flange for the cat back. Basically your removing the H-pipe section and replacing it with the x-pipe.

Pipe does have a small dent in it.

I was thinking the same thing... that's why I was asking if anyone had put one on and had any luck with them. It's hard to tell what is going on inside that thing.

Just MHO- If you have the factory H-Pipe and its sound you want, Keep it !!

I swapped the H-Pipe for a Magnaflow X Pipe 2 years ago and while it eliminated the rattle noise it also subdued the exhaust. This to the point that I was forced to install Corsa Extremes

In hindsight, I think I should have lived with the annoying rattle in exchange for very raucous bodacious exhaust sounds on my 02 Z06.

Another more practical thought is this- if you EVER intend to install LT Headers they come with an X-pipe section.

I don't think I have to worry too much about losing any sound. The SLP Loudmouth exhaust that I have is just straight pipes so it's REALLY loud already. If it quieted down some I wouldn't mind, but I doubt it would quiet too much. :)

I do know that LT headers come with an x-pipe, but I don't see those in my future anytime soon. That is why I am trying to go with a cheap $30 x-pipe rather than the $300 ones like the Corsa or Borlas.

That is a Magnaflow universal X pipe It is totally hollow on the inside between the in and out pipes, so there is no restriction. You can pick them up at Jegs or Summit for about $50.

Where have you seen the "universal x pipe" by Magaflow that looks like the original posted picture?

This is a Magnaflow, it doesn't look anything like the one OP.

Thats what I get for trusting my muffler guy I guess, then again the one that I saw was 3 years ago and its on my truck not my Vette so it's not like it matters I guess. Anyway it is totally hollow in the middle.

Hi I'm new here to the corvetteforum and thank you so much everyone, I've learned so much since I've signed up! I know this is an old forum and post, but I figured since I had this done to my car, I'll let you guys know how it sounds. I have a corsa sport dual tip exhaust with the universal x pipe welded on. Here's a link so you guys can hear how it sounds, let me know how u like it or hate.
