2008 ZHZ - The True Tale

There is a 2008 ZHZ (Hertz Rental) Edition for sale on Ebay for $30K. Has around 25k miles.

I rented a ZHZ and the car had around 30k miles. I took it home and checked the fluids. Man, the oil looked like it was road tar. :ack: It was thick, black, and smelled really bad. As if the oil wasn't changed in 10k+ miles of hard driving. Yet, the DIC said the oil life was 90%. I believe they (Hertz) or someone just reset it and the oil is way past its changing.

The PS fluid was just as bad, dark, grit floating in it, burnt and smelled bad. I bet they never changed it, even after 30k miles or more of hard driving.

The car looked really beat on, the tires were bald, the interior looked like an ape spent a day in it. The car creaked and ran somewhat rough. The brake pads were in need of changing already with only 30k miles. Even the body had numerous scratches, gouges, nicks, dents and looked really bad when examined up close.

Look at You Tube with all the ZHZ's being beat on, with people doing donuts with them, burnouts, and just beating them to death.

Why on earth would someone want to buy a ZHZ? It's a rental car that has been beat to death. Rental cars are known for not being well maintained. Now, if you got a 430HP rental car, imagine all the idiots and the things they did to the car.

One guy I know, rented the car, ice cold motor, and started it up and turned the corner from his house, and then went WOT, all the way up to 100MPH. :smash:

Yet, someone will actually buy a used, rental ZHZ, because it is "rare" (only 500 made). Just my 2 cents...:flag:

:iagree:

I would not want one. I saw one on fleabay listed as a "Corp 1 owner" car....

430 hp or 143 hp, I will never ever buy an ex-rental car. You wouldn't believe the stuff we do to them ...

mcandrew67 11-17-2009 04:19 PM

Yeah I posted a thread a few months ago when I saw a few on Fleabay.
I would never buy one personally. There was also that guy who rented one, added NOS to it and went to the track. :willy:

Last year our group, YPTD, had two ZHZs show up at a Laguna Seca open track day. After flogging them most of the day, one of the event organizers borrowed a ZHZ and lost it exiting t-10 at about 80mph and burried it in the gravel trap. FYI, when a C6 is burried up to its axles, it is hard to find something to attach a tow strap to. Regardless, don't attach the hook to the lower radiator support because it is not really that well secured. Anyway, once back to the pits it took a crew of six people three hours, a box of self-tapping screws, some sheet metal and a big hammer to stuff the radiator support and underbody panels back under the front of the car. The brake pads were chunked and rotors warped and there was so much gravel stuck between the tire beads and the rim on one side of the car that two tires couldn't hold air. After we were done, the only noticeable damage from the top was a small tear in the front bumber cover, and some scratches on the wheels and paint (underside was of course a different story).

The couple that rented the ZHZ for the day, washed it and returned it at night. They never heard back from Hertz.

Dealer in the area has one with 30K miles and is advertising as "Rare limited production." Priced at $37,900 so get it before someone else does!

i rented one in ft lauderdale, this car was not in bad shape.it only had 6k on it .i didnt beat it up it was a great car to rent.i wouldnt buy one from the horror stories im reading here.rent a car and take it to the track, wow.take it and do burn outs, really.seems a little immature.i did see pics of one somebody entered one in a car show.i will admit i put regular gas in it when i returned it :leaving:

Well, I would say if you know what you are getting yourself into, they may not be a terrible deal. If someone wanted to build up a custom Corvette and they could get a ZHZ for $30k or less would not be a bad deal. When I say custom, I mean redo the interior, drivetrain and suspension.

I wouldn't purcahse one either but I'll tell you what, our company has purchased a boatload of ex-rental and fleet cars over the years and we seldom have ANY issues at all. These things are tougher than you think.

bent 11-17-2009 07:52 PM

I asked a hertz guy one day "who in the hell would want to buy a used/abused rental" He looked at me with a straight face and told me that they are the best maintained cars on the road. I looked back at him and laughed right to his face :lolg:

garytucker 11-17-2009 08:43 PM

And I guess Hertz GT Mustangs aren't desirable either! Any used car could have gone through just as much.

You'd be amazed what people do to ensure their car's real history isn't known. Ask me about the flooded out 1000mile M3 or the "corvette up a tree"...neither car had ANYTHING that stated what had really happened to the car.

I also love that some people equate low-mileage with a good car. If I were to put miles on my car a 1/4 mile at a time...the mileage would be low, but the car would be beat.

Who knows...one of these days we may all be kicking ourselves that we didn't by the ZHZ!

To see how well the car was maintained. Whenever I rent a car, I always check the tire pressure and tighten the lug nuts. I don't want to go on a trip and in the middle of nowhere have a tire come loose or blow out because it was under inflated or the lug nuts were not tightened.

Just like a pilot checks over the instruments and looks over the plane he is about to fly, I do the same with a car I am going to take on a long trip. :D
