changed windshield on my 1999
 

My garage door came down and scraped my windshield and its being replaced by a reputable glass person.any one out there had the windshield repld. Im scared that itll never be the same post in with your experiences good and bad..........

Had mine replaced 3 times so far - all times due to trucks throwing rocks (and I have never had the car out of town in nearly 10 years)! Every time insurance picked up the bill less my $100 deductible. No problems - just make sure if you have a HUD that they replace with Genuine GM HUD replacement - not a 3rd party knock off - they tried that on me the first time and I made them change it out 3 times after the first incident.

Not very difficult for the pros - takes about one hour or so:

Things to watch for...
(1) Genuine GM replacement if a HUD option
(2) Antenna connector in tact on replacement (after shipping damage)
(3) Check HUD clarity after installation, Radio reception and Map lights
(4) Check side interior body panels at left and right of windshield to make sure they reattached them properly.

had mine get cracked right in the middle of my view from a rock that was thrown at me in traffic. If i was on a motorcycle, i'd have been dead. The thing was like bigger than a golf ball! anyway, had it replaced looks fine, was like 300 bucks.

I two was worried about it, but it's fine. I will say that I called about 5 places with quotes of 300 bucks, then the last one was like 800 or something crazy. When I asked why they said it was for the window 300 and the gasket that went around the window, that was 500, and only chevy sales them and the other companies arn't telling me about this.

Well when I had my top painted by a family friend the glass guy was at his shop and he said he has done them before, and that it is possible that the gasket or whatever could become damaged, that he's done a few and never messed one, and was able to be reused. So yeah that's my story! :P

Inspect the new windshield CLOSELY, for scratches or damage, before they install it.
It was after mine was already installed, that scratches form shipping were discovered while cleaning and removing the factory stickers from the new windshield.

I had to wait again for a second new factory windshield to be ordered from GM, along with another set of moldings and and seals.

I chose to have the installation done in my garage at home, rather than the glass installer's location. I wanted to keep an eye on everything, and not to have just sit in some waiting room while they worked on it.

i had the same thing 3 times - each time the glass came it was scratched, each time the glass place phoned and told me so i wouldn't waste my time. Finally they got it right and replaced it and i have had no issues. by the way the glass was $1300 and change for a proper replacement:cheers: mine was $100 deductable

Windshields are super expensive...luckily Insurance pays for them minus deductible here in Canada, so they are pretty cheap to replace. Just make sure they put the mirror back where it belongs and not at some strange location. Indy

GM factory replacement windshields have the mirror mounting pad already installed on them. :thumbs:

I have heard they were high,and the HUD is sky high.

Hud windshields are becoming more common these days. When they first came out, they were $2200. I believe they are around $800 now. The one on my '99 was replaced once and it was just fine and perfect. No issues.

Had mine replaced about six years ago. Didn't put in a new gasket and it leaks when it rains hard or for prolonged periods or when pressure washed. Head liner is falling off. Make sure you have your insureance pick up the tab for the gasket/seals. I didn't and had a $500 deductable. No HUD on my car, window was $300. Had I known, I woulda filed a claim and had both window and gasket installed. The glue they used didn't seal right. Good thing I live in the desert south west and don't have to worry about rain so much. I just leave the windows open and it dries out in a day or so.

You can contact any glass installer and probably have them seal it up for you at a very minimul cost.... certainly better than having it leak. Worse comes to worse, get some RTV sealant and goop up the leak area yourself

Had mine replaced last summer. I removed the wipers, plenum, rear view mirror and A-pillar interior trim pieces before the guy got to my house. I also taped over my defroster duct just in case the old windshield broke and let any glass get into it. Same for my HUD opening. Taped it over.
The glass guy seemed to appreciate what I did. Made his job easier and quicker too. After removal, he even paused for a few minutes while I applied some 303 protectant along the leading edge of my dash pad that I can't (easily) get to with the windshield in place. I have a hardtop so I had to schmooze him into being extra careful come time to partially remove my side weatherstripping and the retainers too. The weatherstripping itself is pretty easy, but on hardtops you really need to be careful of the exterior window trim molding (plastic). It's about 3' long and must be removed to get to the sides of the windshield.

Tried that. In addition to it not working. It's very ugly. Also got a hair's width streak on my passenger side window. Haven't been able to scrub that off. If it gets to freezing here, I'll try with an ice scraper.
