Shelby Daytona vs C4
 
A relative of mine owned a Shelby Daytona with a 5 speed. Just wondered how these cars compared to similar C4s of that era. Cant find much info on line. Anyone have any experances with these cars?

My uncle had one. It was silver, black interiors, 4 banger turbo.

I drove it and it had lots of torque but never ran it against a Vette or L98 Z28.

I had the turbo, it pulled rubber is 3 gears.
I sold it to a buddy who played with turbos, and he actually got it to be a pretty quick car just with tuning, and a couple adjustments to the turbo.
I know that car would have beat any stock c4 , except the LT4 that I am sure would have beat it.

He paid $600 for it.

You mean that little turbo 4-banger Dodge? If that's the thing you're talking about, I think they are a death trap!
A friend of my Son had one and the only thing it would do fairly well, was go straight. It torque steered like a mother under power and it had all the handling agility of a pregnant Rhino on a wet Clay river bank! :willy: Yes, he wrecked it a few times trying to beat the usual 5.0's, Camaro & Firebirds. Strong little motor while it lasted, but I never saw one live very long under the boot & boost of a teenager. It MIGHT stay with an early C4 on the strip, but really wasn't close to being in the same league of quality and driveability. Overpowered flimsy tin box!

This kit was assembled by a guy out of San Diego. He did the whole project, it took him over a year to complete.

I got to stand next to Carroll Shelby in the early 70's while he was talking to the owner of one of the original ones. While we were visiting, He (Shelby) was picking little chips of the original paint off the spoiler of the car!:rofl: I could see the owners heart beating in his neck every time a fresh flake came off, but he didn't say a word about it! What-a ya say to the guy that built the thing[I].....please don't pick the original paint off my million dollar car???: :rofl:

Did you see the show they did on them recently?
it is very interesting. They almost dumped the original racers off for nothing or scraped them after the contract was over.:eek:

I owned 2 Dodge Daytonas, a 86 C/S turbo one and a 88 Shelby turbo 2 intercooled. The 86 had a cam, bigger injectors, and a 15 dollar "grainger" valve that ran the boost up to the computer cutout, which was at 16 psi. This car was faster than my C4, and I drove the stink out of that thing. The intercooled car was one of the fastest cars I have ever owned. It was also grainger valved on the waste gate. A 87 intercooled Shelby owned the "completely stock" class (not sure what the designation was) of the NHRA in the early 90's. The 2.2 Chrysler was designed by the guy who engineered the slant 6, and was practically bulletproof. I know guys that were running over 20 psi on stock high mileage bottom ends. You could mod them very cheap. Mopar Action had a feature called 12's for 1200 dollars. Buy a turbo car, take some weight out of it, up the boost, and be in the 12's. I guess I am a fan. I have heard that Carrol Shelby himself still thrashes a Daytona that he owns.

sure, there are cars faster, quicker, better handling than corvettes, but did you ever notice, that every time someone wants to talk performance, they always compare it to a corvette? are we (corvette) the benchmark of speed and power? i remember a couple years ago, one of the mag-rags compared a twin-turbo something-or-other ford focus SVO, SVT or something, to none other, than a frickin' corvette - come to think about it, it may have been a C6Z06. how many car ads have you seen that state "corvette killer"? its nice to know that my 250 horse L98 1990 coupe is such a performance target! - :lol: remember, all it takes is time and money - given enough of both, and you could probably build a smart-for-two , that would out perform a corvette...

I found some information on Frontrunners.net. Seems the Daytona was turbo ed in 84 and was at that time a 16.4 second car which would of been slower than a stock 84 Crossfire. In 88 the Shelby version was a 15.5 second car in stock form which a 88 C4 was faster than. However many seemed to modify these cars( as one postor said) and made them capable of quarter mile times in the 12s. But from what I have found out in stock form these cars were slower in straight line performance them similar Corvettes. One test however compared the Turbo Daytona to the 84 SVO Mustang which was a 15.8 car in 1984. I wonder if the mags ever took the new 84 Corvette and compared it to the little modified fox platform Mustang.

I had several of the turbo cars. My last was an '89 that I modded. It ran 25 PSI of boost and felt like a rocket ship taking off when the RPM came up. It was a very fun car! I never did get it to the track.

Stock they are slower then a C4 and handle poorly. I updated the suspension and it did okay. The torque steer was bad! Here's a pic:

Well I mean I am not saying that. I'm saying that they can hang with if not beat a stock c4 which 240- 300 hp is no race car,, but it is and especially at that time a sports car.
I mean I know better than to say the thing will hand with 330 hp. I and owned one, I know they were not that great. But after some tuning yes I think they will hang with lt1 for a little bit.
