Son was browsing neon Forum and came arcoss this

"HI! I just wanted to know, whats The Best Engine For All Motor? The 2.0L SOHC , 2.0L DOHC, Or The Stratus 2.4L DOHC Engine?
My Goal is to Outrun a 505hp Corvette, or just keep up with one, and do this as sleepy <---(Sleeper) as possible lol...

Also, Does anyone know whats the fastest you can go, in an all motor neon?"

ROFL

kh24 01-06-2010 11:56 PM

Id get the stratus engine. Those things are known for being sleepers and if you put it in a dodge neon....watch out

c5blkvetteguy 01-07-2010 12:02 AM

I would think a neon would shake apart well before it hit 150mph!

blackmachdown 01-07-2010 12:03 AM

Id advise against those motors, and swap in the 1.8l from the pinto those things are bullet proof

The youth of today scares me...

My son had a Neon SRT-4 with a built up 2.4L engine . He added all the toys to get to a stage III performance level. I want to tell you, that little Mopar scared the hell out of me whenever I had a chance to drive it.
From a standing start, it was almost always better to start out in second gear. Way too much torque steer, and absolutely no traction out of the hole. From about a 20-25 roll it was much better, but would still spin the tires thru 2nd and 3rd gear. I believe his top end was about 145mph or so.
His best times at the strip were in the high 12's. All of this from a little turbocharged four banger. I read somewhere that a Dodge Neon set the record at the Bonneville salt flats for a 4cyl engine at 255mph.:willy:

Seemed pretty quick to me!

iced98lx 01-07-2010 12:24 AM

there's more than one srt4 neon around here that will put the hurt on any stock c5 in a real big up and quick hurry... even C6 z06's aren't safe if you can't drive...

not my style, but there are some quick ones out there, that's for sure.

blackmachdown 01-07-2010 12:32 AM

no doubt the srt4's are wicked, however, the original topic was about all motor neons outrunning c6z's...not gunna happen unless this guy has a stripped out car with a redline around 12k and tons of money

SCM_Crash 01-07-2010 12:42 AM

I've seen fully built neons making a LOT of boost, but they're far from sleepers. My friends SRT4 didn't keep up with my Trans Am even after boosting a little higher than stock and my Trans Am (at the time) was bone stock with a paper filter and all.

To make a Neon fast like a Corvette and still keeping it a sleeper would probably even stump Nelson Racing Engines.

Ok, I have to post this link again. When these little 2.0L are built right, they fly. I rode in this 2.0L at 760 hp. Good Lord it was unbelievable.

I think a 500rw+ Neon would be ANYTHING but a sleeper.

Pinto actually had a 2.3 liter 4 banger.
Got me to thinking back to 1976 when my GF was looking for her first car. We found a mint 1972 Pinto Pangra, (Google it). It was a super rare, 200 built, Pinto with a factory fibreglass Pantera styled front end. The hood and fenders were about a foot longer and it had pop up headlights. Hers came with a Mr. Gasket dual point distributor, Spearco aluminum intake manifold, Holley 390 CFM four-barrel, Hooker header, Hurst shifter and Fenton aluminum wheels. With a 4.10 in the back and 4-speed it would smoke Celicas, Corollas, Civics and Datsun 510s. She became a good driver and loved to burn the rice. We travelled alot in that car and people were always WTF? It was the only one I ever saw in person.

" I drive a Neon" just doesn't sound right 2hp or 1000hp its still a POS car with a hell of a motor...no thanks

wdtiger 01-07-2010 04:17 AM

Some of those four bangers do some pretty damned impressive stuff, no doubt. However, in my personal observations, none of them ever seem to last long before blowing up. I'll stick to my big cubes, thanks.

Honestly, how much time do you spend flooring the car and going full speed and how much time do you spend cruising....a Neon will always be a little beater car and no one will every drool over it. If you drive a Vette even slowly or park it somewhere, people will notice you and give you the thumbs up:thumbs: I'd rather have a 10hp Vette than a 1000hp Neon anyday. :D

Very well said.

I had a Neon before my 'vette. An 05 SXT with the 2.0 SOHC. Rated at a whopping 132 horses. I bet it actually got more like 100. But hey, it was a good, cheap car. Even with my lead foot, I averaged 21 mpg.

Yeah, as good as the engine was, it isn't worth tuning. Oh, by good, I mean durable. Not fast. And by durable, I mean I was surprised it didn't explode from the abuse I gave it.
