Am I too big for a 69' coupe?
Please don't laugh, or give any crazy replies. I have wanted one of these cars for as long as I can remember. I just drove a 69' today, and am contemplating purchase. It is a 4 spd T-top w/o tilt wheel. I am 6'1" and 230 lbs with a size 13 shoe. I did not necessarily have any problems with gas/brake, but did with clutch engagement . Every time I went to let off the clutch my left knee would hit the wheel and door panel at the same time. Do any of you guys out there have this problem? It seems like a tilt wheel would help, but I don't know. I've wanted one of these cars for a long time, and now I just don't know. I'm very upset about this. Please Help.:willy:

I'm 6'1", 210 and size 12.5 shoe. I've been more comfortable in other cars but my love of my car and the fun driving it makes up for any discomfort.

6-3 1/2, 230lbs, you'll get used oi it.

6'3" 230lbs
get a smaller steering wheel..remove the ttop liners...maybe fab up some lower seat tracks |
If you have a gut - you'll need a tilt/tele column. The fellow I bought my '69 from shopped at the Big 'n Tall store and got to the point where the standard column caused the wheel to rub his belly. It's also hard to ingress/egress for taller, rounder guys.
Also, you might find the headroom tight - especially if you're toupe is stacked high. '69 seats will sit you higher - '70 and beyond redesigned the seats to lower the occupant about 1" closer to the floor. |

Stay in tune.... |
6' 2" 240 lbs here, once you are in the cockpit you are fine! Like it was said before get a smaller steering wheel. As far as headroom, do what I did ...get a convertible! I never plan on driving it unless the top is down! Good luck

6'1" 225 here and I have no problems with my 68 coupe. Just get used to sliding your right knee under the steering wheel sideways as you enter. If you want cramped, try an old solid axle with the hardtop roof :willy:

You just need to develope "technique" when getting in and out and driving your Corvette and you'll be fine. ;)

6'3" 190, and I fit fine. I sit, then swing the legs in. No tilt but maybe some day....
When I look at this pic, it really shows how small and low the vette is. Glenn  http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...Delivery-6.jpg |
6'5 around 265
I had to get a vert. 6'5 at about 265. There are bigger problems in the world. You can deal with it.

I'm between 6'2" and 6'3" and 265 lbs. I don't currently have a tilt wheel and while it's not the most comfortable fit, it's a lot of fun. If you really love it, you learn how to make little adjustments to how you sit, how you position your legs, little adjustments to set position and next thing you know you forget about the tight fit and because of how much fun your having. I haven't made any mods to seat or anything yet, but a tilt wheel is part of my future plans just to make it a bit easier.

1973 Vette. I'm 6'3", 230 pounds, Shoes are 12's. I can't wear a wide profile running shoe or I get hung up a bit on the pedals. I have a tilt/tele steering wheel, so it does make it easier to get in and out. I have the headliners out of the T-Tops. I rarely drive with the tops on. Is it a bit cramped? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely. My "friends" give me a hard time about my head sticking out the roof. Once I get settled in to my driving position. I don't really stickout the top. I look at my height as an advantage to see over my supercharger. :D

This is a '78, but same concept.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...pwr/Patcar.jpg I have owned over 20 Vettes, including 68,69,73,74, etc..... I am 6'3" 217 and have always felt right at home:thumbs: |
Damn! All of us C3 dudes seem to be the total opposite of (Chasing Classic Cars) Wayne Carini! I'm 6'4" 260 size 13 and as it has been said there is a learning curve to comfort. I enjoy the of getting out with the roof on! My knees make this cool crackle sound as I stand up. The 68' with a 4 speed causes muscle cramps even for a normal size guy. I love the extra 2 inches in the 77' with the wheel closer to the dashboard, and taking off the shoes help unless you have a heel crack and then it's all uncomfortable!

Thank you guys!
I posted this just before going to bed. I did not expect this kind of immediate response. When I woke up this morning, the first thing I thought about was my drive yesterday. It is good to hear that so many of you larger guys have found your own way to make it work.
I feel a lot better about moving forward with a deal. I f the owner will give a little on his end, then I will find a way to make it work. You guys are awesome:thumbs:, Lance |
I feel like a midget at 5' 10". I have to pull my seat forward!

:iagree: Alot of big guys have just told you how much they love their vettes.
I say, go for it, and enjoy. |
