Auto Transmition 3rd gear not working

I have a 96 corvette with automatic transmission. I was on the high way and passing someone. Then the 3rd gear and overdrive gears did not catching. Now I only have 1st and 2nd gear. When it trys to go into 3rd, it just spins, like it is in neutral, it will not give me 3rd gear. I drove the car home in 2nd gear and it is stilling in my garage. No leads, has oil. What is the problem? What can I do?

Peter, my 96' did the same thing at about 175,000 miles. Had to have it flat bedded to "my favorite tranny shop". I wish I had a better answer for you. Sometimes they give up the ghost early and some, not so early (175,000 miles). Good luck.

Did they have to rebuild the tranny, and if so what did it cost?

Good question just happened to a friends 94 while the club was on outing today. No 3rd / OD

Same thing happened to me- lost 3rd & 4th and it required a rebuild.

Make sure you take it to a reputable transmission shop, which can be hard to find. My guy talked the talk, but it was slipping two years later.

:sadangel: Sorry to see that for you so early in the spring. Good luck.
