Oil Capacity
I don't have the technical know-how to do my own oil change. In the past when I brought it to the dealer, they charged me 7 quarts.
Last year, I brought 6 quarts of synthetic myself to the dealer to cut down costs. What I want to know is, what exactly is the capacity of my oil tank on my C6? Page 427 of my manual under Capacities and Specifications specifies 5.5 quarts. Can I bring in 5 quarts for the dealer to do an oil change? I've seen some "DIY oil change kits" at local autozone...they only provide 5 quarts as a standard. Thanks! |
It takes 5.5 qts with a filter change. Take 6 quarts or top it off yourself afterwards.

I use 6 qts, bought in a 6 qt case. Z51 pkg has oil cooler..hence the extra oil.
Really should give an oil change a try. A very simple DIY project. Undo nut/plug at bottom of oil pan, Oil pours out. Unscrew filter. Done. Refasten plug, screw on new filter, fill with oil. Done. All of 20 minutes work. |
I do my own oil changes...and only put in 5 qt. I race it, and in my way of thinking I'm better off with 5 qt than being 1/2 too high..
PS .. I Drag race, NOT ROAD COURSE... the oil pick up is at the bottom rear of the oil pan, and being I only run the car 1/4 mile all the oil is at the rear of the pan due to acceleration, & I do not have to worry about oil starvation going around turns as I'm down to 25 mph when I turn off the track... Also having less oil prevents the crankshaft from splashing through all the extra oil in the pan... I usually change it every 5000 miles, and if it goes any lower than the bottom mark on the dip-stick I will add 1/2 qt. Although even after 5000 miles and that includes racing most weekends + a 100 mile trip to & from the track (total 200 miles) I've never had to add oil... (guess I'm lucky) my car don't use any oil... |

They hold 5.5 quarts unless it's a Z-51 then it's 6 quarts. The drain is a plug on the bottom of the motor. Can't miss it! Drain then unscrew the filter. It loosens counter clock wise. Same with the plug. Get a Wix filter. Fill it up with oil and then put it on turning clock wise. Tighten as much as you can with one hand! Tighten the oil plug just snug. Don't over tighten! Drain oil back in to empty oil jug and take it to recycle! |
What Rockin'Blue said. Nothing technical beyond lefty loosey and righty thighty.

Wow! Not much technical know how needed. No oil tank on a C-6 either.

Get out there and "man-up", get your hands oily, smear some oil on your face, be one with the car.

oil capacity
09 mc6, not z51. I did my first oil change, 550 miles. Pennzoil with pure one filter. Put in 5.5 qts. Dipstick reads down 1/2 qt. Owners manual says 6 qts. What gives?

I honestly don't know why everyone is so worried about 5.5 vs 6 quarts. Even if your manual calls for 5.5, just throw in the full 6 and call it a day. I don't think there is any engine out there that can't handle an extra half quart of oil. |

I will do my best to "man up" :) Thanks all of you for your input! :) I will bring 5 quarts to my dealer, or man-up and do it myself.

Why do most posters want to put in an EXTRA 1/2 of oil... (I know I'm in the minority) but I prefer to run my car 1/2 qt low... (prevents the crank from splashing through the oil in the pan..
I know of NHRA STOCK cars (I use the term loosely) that when they are trying to run for a record, they use 3 qts of oil in a Chevy small block! (That is for Drag Racing Only) no turns!! I have had my 05 for almost 3 yrs, and never put more than 5 qts in.. the oil is at the bottom mark on the dip-stick.. I check it often but have never had to add any (I change it at 5000 miles) I bought the car with 6000 miles on it and now have 17,500 a LOT of them 1/4 mile at a time at 6000+ rpm never any problems ! As for oil filters, I use Carquest and Mobil 1, 5 30 oil... |

Why are you going to bring them only 5 quarts? That's not enough.
:iagree: I put 5000 miles on between oil changes, with a lot of 1/4 mile runs at 6000 rpm + and still don't have to add oil.. (Guess I'm lucky my car don't use any..) I DO check it often and make sure its only at the 1/2 way mark or bottom mark on the dip-stick... if it should ever go lower I'll add as needed.. I CHANGE MY OWN OIL whoever copied the post it was not my post who said I bring the car to the dealer.... |
