5.0 Engine
I have been reading about Ford's new 5.0 engine that they have developed for the Mustang. Very impressive engine. It puts out 412 HP from only 302 C.I. Too bad the General does not have the funds to develope such an engine for the Corvette.

 Not knocking Ford's engines here. But the general has the funds and, I will take the LS3 or the 556 HP Caddy/Camaro engines over any of Ford's.

Ford had to do something. GMs 3.6L V6 was putting out 304hp.
|
Have you seen the size uf the 5.0 motor , its huge .

Lets think about it. The Mustang 5.0 has 4 cams and 32 valves. How much do you thing a pair of heads cost?
|
Sorry, I am not all that impressed with the new 5.0. The peak hp is at 6500 and torque at 4000. The fuel mileage is similiar, but only because of the much lower displacement. Plus according to autoblog, just like Chrysler with the Hemi, Ford practically stole the block design from GM. When Ford can put the cam back in the block where it belongs, then have enough cubes to really get some low end torque and still get 25-30 mpg like my Vette then I might be impressed. Just my .02.

Nothing like the LS3 and one cam with only 16 valves to put down a mere 430/6 HPhttp://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ons/cool-1.gif

The Stang GT has needed a real engine for a long time. The 4.6 is old and worn out, time to replace it.

412 hp yet the car still weighs close to 4000lbs. Lead sled. That motor still isnt enought to haul that thing around. Plus who the hell wants to try and work on a motor with 4 friggin cams. No thanks.

You Ford haters are funny! Some of you guys need to crawl back into your caves. What kind of power do you think a version of the LS3 with dual overhead cams would be making? If GM had an engine in the base Corvette that made 500hp, I really doubt many of you guys would care what configuration it was. (yes I know there is already the LS7 low tech engine)
AS far as "others" stealing the GM block design, that too is just so funny. The American automakers have been sharing technology for many many years. Advances in technology help them all - and they know that. |
We will see how this motor does in the aftermarket. Ford's motors have always responded well to FI. But I have a few mustang buddies that say I would cam my car but it is like $1200 just for the cams and I would only get 25 hp. That is what sucks there is no room for someone to really improve power on a budget. BTW I think this thing already has factory LT's so no way to improve there.

Nice engine, but an unsleeved aluminum block?
Don't care what the cylinder walls are coated with, can anyone say VEGA? :D |
There is a lot of anti-Ford statements being posted on here. Strange how buying a car puts you on some sort of make believe team. The Stang needed to compete with the LS3 Camaro - its that simple. They needed to do it with good mileage too - does anyone know what that is? I have a question though - why is the LS3 in the camaro rated at 422/hp and the same engine in my Vette rated at 430+/hp?
|
The bowtie boys in here need to chill. It is a pretty impressive engine. Seems like the people complaining the most feel threatened.

The base Corvette with 436 HP is very impressive & with the 505 HP, 638 HP on the 2 other Vettes, along with the 556 HP Caddy CTS & Camaro Z/28 soon to be a reality and Mustang destroyer. |
