Different keys for alarm, spare tire, and rear storage??
 

I never had the above mentioned keys for my 72. The ignition key nor door keys will fit the other locks. They appear to use a completely different key blank. Took them to a locksmith, she will try to find a blank to fit them...

Were they all different from the factory???

I think there should only be 2 keys for your car. Maybe the earlier years were different, but my '76 only has 2 keys. The square head key only works in the ignition, the round head key works in the alarm, the doors and the storage compartments (my car doesn't have a lock on the spare tire....)

The oval key should work the Spare tire, storage door and alarm lock. I've been chasing locks for my 71' so I could make them fit the original key. All the repo locks use a "H" key blank. Your 72' should be a "D" blank. I was a locksmith years ago so I was able to rekey the used locks to match my original key. All the key blanks are readily available.

For my 72, the square key works the ign and the doors, the round key works the rear compartment and alarm. I have no spare lock.

70 keys
 

My original owner 70 uses the same key for the ignition and locking/unlocking the doors. Oval key is for the storage lock and the spare tire lock. No alarm, it was about the only option I did not get.

dont know if it helps or adds confusion. I have my 69 since 1973, it came with 3 keys. The alarm uses a small round headed key, the ignition and doors use the standard size square headed key, and the spare tire lock and internal storage use the round standard size key

I also have a 69 with alarm.
I only have 2 keys, one E and one J key

Heres the scoop. When I purchased it, my 72 DID NOT have the original ignition cylinder, NOR did it have 2 working door locks (which I didnt have a key for ANYWAY)...

SO... I have one key for the replacement ignition, and the replacement door lock cylinders came with a key...Neither the new ignition nor new door keys fit the cubby, alarm, and spare tire. They are an entirely different key blank...

I have a locksmith cutting a key for the 3 (cubby, spare, alarm)..So I will have 3 keys on my RESTO-MOD 72 key chain....

I'm not ABOUT to remove the door cylinders just to have them re-keyed to match the ignition! Its far easier to just hang another key on the chain!

Yes in a perfect world, I understand that the 72 ORIGINALLY came with ONE key for doors/ignition, perhaps a second key for the others.

I departed the "perfect world" when I installed pipes and glassed in my original exhaust holes!!:rofl:

my 79 has 2 keys.
square for ignition.
round for doors, glove box, storage boxes and spare tire.
no facotry alarmn the 79's

the ignition key on my 1969 is a E and the rear compartment/tire key is a H. Based on Paragon reproductions listing of the alarm cylinder, 1968 thru mid 1970 used a separate third key. Starting in mid 1970 thru 1977 they switched to a two key combination which became the factory service replacement for 1968 thru mid 1970.

I own a C3 from 1971 with alarm. Is it difficult to adapt a new spare tire lock (from Zip Corvette) to an existing key set?

A locksmith can 're-key' the new spare tire lock to use your current key that's for the glove box, the alarm, and original spare tire lock. He'll need your new lock and your current oval head key.
OR, you could just put the new key on the ring with the other two.

My 69 uses the square key for the doors and ignition. The round key is for the compartments and spare lock. The original alarm uses a small key labeled Briggs and Stratton as that is who supplied the original lock/alarm set in the rear valance. I almost threw the extra keys away when I got the car figuring they had nothing to do with the car itself....

It seems that the Briggs and Stratton keyed one was used until 69 so your car is correct but i need to follow the post of Alan 71, ordering a spare tire lock with oval key and adapting it to my existing set.:flag:
