Should my ZZ4 have a starter brace???

if you have the origional gm starter. you should think about a brace. if it's an aftermarket lightweight starter then i wouldn't worry about it..

Considering the cost and effort to install one of these....

I think it's worth the effort.
GM Part Number: 3851294
Starter brace w/threaded self tapped hole and screw. 1964-67 w/327. 1968-69 w/327/350. $12

Good luck... GUSTO

I have the same question. I replaced my L48 with a ZZ4 and since the ZZ4 has the smaller flexplate I installed the newer style starter with the different nose piece that tilts it closer to the engine block. The brace that was on the original starter no longer fits so I'm going without one for now. Is the one pictured above for the newer style starter?

Yes they do have a shorter one... it costs a bit more $17

I had one of the longer braces for the other starter as well and simply cut it down to fit the starter for the 11" flywheel. I drilled a new hole and in the correct position and it fits perfectly. If you cut it right and round the end, it even looks like the correct one.

Good luck... GUSTO

After I sold my race car I took my spare starter (mini Tilton super ) and installed it on my 454 ( about 8 yrs. ago ) and have had no issues w/o the brace.

For my ZZ4, I installed a ministarter from the GM Performance Parts catalog. It doesn't need a brace. It's a nice unit, much smaller than the original and weighs about 1/2 as much. I think the original weighs 16 lbs and the mini is 8 pounds.
