Why do my dashboard lights go dim when headlights turned on?

Why do my dashboard lights go dim when i turn my headlights on? When they are off the dash is bright. Is there a dimmer I don't know about?

It's supposed to do that. They dim so you don't have bright lights glaring in your face. You can brighten them back up with the dimmer switch to the left of the steering column.

Yup....if the dash lights were the same brightness when driving at night, they would bother your night vision.

Thanks so much guys. I wasn't holding the dimmer switch long enough for the dash lights to brighten.

Like in a submarine or other 'night lighting' environment....the lighting dims to protect your night vision.

:iagree: BINGO!

Most OEMs today have different levels of backlighting for daytime and night time illumination levels. F.Y.I.

One of the things that's very cool about our Corvettes, though, is that the dash lights (and nav screen for those so equipped) don't just get dim when the headlights are on and bright when the headlights are off. The brightness of the dash lights is also determined by a separate ambient light sensor. If it's bright outside and the headlights are on, the dash lights will still be bright. Likewise, if it's not very bright outside, the dash lights will be dim even if it's not so dark that you need the headlights to be on. Pretty cool IMO.
