Summit 1104 to much cam for an L48?

I'm going to swap some Vortec heads onto my '73's L48 for some budget power. I'm going to be installing headers as well as an Edelbrock Performer(although intake choice isn't definate). I've got a manual trans and the stock 3.36 rear gears, and I want to stick with the Q-jet. I'm looking at either the Summit 1103 or 1104 cam kit. I'm concerned that if I go with the 1103 I'll want more, and conversley the 1104 may be to much for my daily driver. What are your opinions on the subject? Thanks for the info :)

I have a similar cam in my 78, but with slightly less duration and a 110* LSA. I have 3.55 rear gears, AFR heads and headers, along with a 700R4.

Power below 2000 is worse than stock, by 2500 it's stronger than stock and pulls pretty good all the way to 5500 or so.

That being said, I don't think your stock heads would really have the high end power my components offer. I'd say the 1102 or 1103 would be a better bet.

For the record, the stock L-48 cam is rated at 1000-3200 rpm or so.

You'll be happy with the 1103. The Vortec heads and a Summit 1103 cam work well together. It's very close to the GM 350 HO engine specs. IIRC that engine makes 330 HP and 380 lb/ft torque. You should see similar numbers.

Hey, I'm thinking of going with that felpro 1094 head gasket with head studs to increase my CR. So, Jackson, you happy with that gasket? Sorry to hijack, but I ran the Summit 1105 with early AFR 190s and Performer manifold for years in my stock L-82. I ran the summit 1102 in my El Camino 305 for years. Just more data points.

hiya Bee Jay
yes sir I like it. typical uncut deck has piston about 0.025" down in hole @ TDC ... so that 3.2cc , 0.015" gasket sets the quench just about ideal. I recommend steel shim 1094 for cast iron head & iron block but Not for aluminum. Others say ok for alum but I cannot recommend for alum.

1094 comes w/ rubberized coating ...
....do Not add any sealer/coating/adhesive ...
..... Do clean decks & heads real good w/ brake aerosol then dry ....
....do Not add any sealer/coating/adhesive ...

These cam suggestions are tough, the 1103 maybe a little not enough. If you want it to sound like you have a cam also besides run well I would think the 1104 may be better. I run the 1105 in my 68 327 with worked over heads 10.7 comp. with the performer intake and 2.5 ram horn manifolds and an auto. It runs hard to about 6200 about like stock down low but you can really hear it at idle, right off idle it is smooth, so judging by my car the 1103 maybe a bit to soft.
Heads 1103 tails 1104
