Low oil pressure -- loctite on oil pressure relief valve

I read where some low oil pressure problems were caused by loctite interferring with the oil pressure relief valve. Would this have happened to all the cars on the line at the factory or only some? If only some --why? At what mileage would the problem occur? Was this typical for any certain year? How do you know if your vette is "infected"? Were there any other causes for this low oil problem? thank for any insight.

Several engines have experienced no oil pressure at start up. After the engine runs 5-10 seconds the oil pressure builds.

In this situation the oil pressure relief valve has proven to be sticking open.

In my situation the sticking OPRV did have red loctite on it.

I hear this problem is most common with the Y2K model year, FWIW.GM knows about the 97-00 problems but is keeping it hush hush. I hear improvements were made in '01 to the pumps.

How many miles did your cars have on them when this problem arose. What was the cost ot fix?
Thanks

Get an ARE blueprinted/ported oil pump. Extra insurance against failed oil pumps and much higher oil pressure at idle and WOT.

Re: Low oil pressure -- loctite on oil pressure relief valve (123vette456)

My car had under 13,791 on it when I brought the problem to the dealer. The dealer said they couldn't find a problem.

When the problem surface (Lifters not getting oil) again it had 16,780. this is when I told them based on what I've read the oil pump is bad and it's probably got a sticking oil pressure relief valve. They said that's nice we are going to replace the lifters.

When things started getting serious (no oil pressure when driving) it had 19,430 on it. another flatbed tow to the dealer and request to look at the oil pump. The dealer basically said we will determine what's wrong with the car by removing the oil pans. They said hey there's burnt oil in here now wonder the oil pick up tube is clogged. They replaced the oil pickup tube and gave it back to me.

When I got home I check the oil and found out they had only put 5 quarts of oil in.

I had a "come to Jesus" meeting with the service manager and the GM rep the next week. With 19,670 they final agreed (at my assistance :smash: ) to disassemble the engine and check the things I wanted checked.

The oil pump, the main bearings, and the piston to cylinder tollerence.

They found the oil pump with the OPRV stuck open with loctite, a spun main bearing, and pistons that had double the p / c tollerence.

GM rebuilt the engine (with the assistance of a local speed shop) and bored the block 1 over and put in hand fitted pistons, with the "new" rings.

Dealer claim the rebuild cost GM $5k. Bone heads! If they would have just pulled the oil pump when I ask them to.
