SS Brakes Vacuum Pump Install
Did you install an electric vacuum pump in your vette? Where did you put it? How did it work for you?
My engine is not producing enough vacuum, so I picked up a SS Brakes vacuum pump. I'm going to install an aluminum plate against the fiberglass toward the front side where the driver's door jam is, behind the wheel well. I'm going to use the 1 bolt for the alarm horn to secure it and also rivet it to the fiberglass and mount the pump to the plate. My vette wants to stall when I hit the brakes at low idle, and the headlights and a/c controls don't work very well. |
Looking for the same thing? Anybody?
Mike80 which pump did you pickup? Where did you decide to mount it? Got an ypicutres? How did it all work out? |
Stalling during braking is somewhat common. I would start by adjusting your idle mixture to get higher vacuum. And use full manifold vacuum for your vacuum advance. This has worked for me in the past, and your brake pedal will love you for it...

Same problem
I'm having the same problem. I posted a question last week and got no replies. Is the SS Brakes pump a continous duty pump?
|
The pump is made by SSBrakes, but I bought it from either Summit Racing or Jegs. It is connected just to the brake booster, and now the brakes work great. When you depress the brake pedal and then release, the pump kicks on for a short period of time, then turns off until you brake again. It has some weight to it and was tight installing it behind the drivers fender vent, but seems to work well there. Sorry, haven't got around to taking pictures yet.

WHAT no pics!!!:toetap: good to hear it works..

Glad to hear it works. I was hoping to find something that I could run my headlights and crankcase venting thru but can't seem to find anything that will run continous without burning up. Can't wait to see pics.

Sorry it took so long, but here's some pictures.

Hi,
Does this pump have a secondary vacuum outlet? Trying to work out if I could use it for the pop up lights and wiper door system on a 68 vette. Many thanks Dave |
Just put a "T" fitting on the hose. Make sure your vacuum system (headlights, wiper door, HVAC) can hold a vacuum. If you have leaks, the pump will keep cycling on and off and it will quickly drive you to madness. If I remember correctly, the on pressure is 18"hg and off is around 25"hg.

I was going to use it for my headlights also. I called the manufacturer and they strongly suggested that I only use it for the brakes, and not split the lines to run the headlights also. So, I just use it for my brakes. I don't need any surprises when I'm trying to stop.

I used a small storage tank as well on mine that way the pump doesn't have to run all the time to keep up with braking a lot
