How Can I Fix These Pistons?

I was noticing that 3 of my spark plugs would foul a little, so I pulled the pistons out of the bores to see what was going on. Do these pistons look like they can be fixed? I was thinking maybe bonding some aluminum sheet metal onto the skirts and buying some special rings of some kind to make them seal again. Should I oil the piston pins with anything special before I put them back in? What type of rings do I need with these pistons after I fix them? I’m thinking a good bead blast will clean them up, but what do I do about the ring grooves…? Will JBWeld work? The third one shown doesn't have a top ring anymore. Will it work as a single-ring piston?

After I fix them, I was thinking I should cut down on the 300-horse shot of nitrous, 32 pounds of boost and back off the timing a little. Any other suggestions? If all else fails, I'll put them on eBay as original Corvette pistons - watch for the ad.

Does the humor mitigate the pain?

I didn't show a forth piston, because there wasn't anything left to take a picture of. Since the piston wasn't there, the plug wasn't fouling, so it must be good. I'll just leave that bore without a piston, 'cause that seemed to work pretty good.

You could try Zaino....well perhaps not. What engine problem led to that catastrophic failure?

Wow:eek::eek:
I'm sure it will buff out :leaving:

I'm thinkin some kind of cold weld epoxy & then use only snake oil... should be just fine!

I would try some of the low temp potmetal filler rod to get the shape back then file them smooth. Use a hacksaw blade to cut new ring grooves and your good to go!

There's something wrong with those pistons?:leaving:

You may need some 30 weight oil and some ball bearings! And get some antifreeze. preferably Prestone,...........no make that Quaker State.

lars,

If you did not pull it apart 'Mechanic in the can" would have worked. Now you are SOL

JB Weld and silicone sealant can do wonders on about anything. Cuzin Bubba swears by 'em. :yesnod:

what does the block look like? I would bet that is toast.

Just try some of that engine restore stuff

BBCorv70 10-09-2010 10:20 PM

Do the numbers match? Could be originals, worth a lot of money if restored? ;-)

jordan89 10-09-2010 11:18 PM

I'm pretty sure some Seafoam would've fixed that:rofl:.Try some bondo and slap them back on.

I think I see an image of Jesus in the second pic. They will be flocking to you.I would charge maybe $1.00 a person, and you could set up a lemonade stand on the side.Setup a non-profit organization and become tax exempt.:grouphug: sign me up.

Hi Lars,
Can a poorly re-built Q-Jet cause that?
Regards,
Alan

Put them back in the block, wet the whole thing down with a hose and stick the whole mess in the dryer... they'll "shrink fit" themselves and be good as new!
