Chipmunk in Garage
 

How do I get rid of it.
Found acorns on the workbench and droppings.
Garage is concrete raised footings all around
I see no places for entry on the inside or perimeter outside.
In the summer I often have both doors open when working but close everything down tight when done.
I have no cats or dogs so that is not an option and don't want any.
Are there any old school remedies I can use or any electronic devices that will encourage him to leave as it is fall in New England now and I want him out before winter and he does anything to my restored 68 Coupe.
Then I will be forced to find and kill every Chipmunk in the USA to make sure I get him.
Any suggestions of things you've done that worked ?
Presently have moth balls everywhere but don't know if that is a good idea or not.

I tried the humane way first with a cage and walnuts as bate. He goes in to get the bate and the door drops behind him , and then you take him for a little ride far away from your home. That didn't work for me I had to resort to Rat Traps with peanut butter or walnuts as bate.
You need to get him out of your garage they like to eat rubber parts, electrical wiring, plastic piping , they resort to eating anything, Make their homes in heater boxes of cars eat the fan blades in the heater box.

Have the same problems with mice. They have already chewed through the fiber optics bundle once, chewed the blades off of the heater fan, stripped much of the sound deadener from behind the dash, pee-d on the carpets under the seats (really stinks), chewed vacuum hoses, and best of all died in the furthest end of the heater box requiring removal of the entire dash to get it out.

I've heard of using moth balls, Bounce dryer sheets and Irish spring soap. May also want to set baited traps.

I got 2 by accident a couple of years ago when I put an electric fence around the garden to keep the squirrels out. I had the wire about 2" off the ground and when the little guys tried to go under it it fried em. I got 2 chipmunks , a squirrel and a robin all in a 24 hour period. Needless to say I had to remove it , I'm just glad the tiny poodle from next door didn't wander over.

If you poison him......he's gonna stink until you find him...! :eek:

There are rodent poisons that create a situation in which the animal craves water. In short he dehydrates to death, which means he'll go outside looking for water and therefore leave your car to do so.

You can buy friendly repellants at your local hardware store, garden center etc... I use to own a hardware store and we sold lots of this stuff and customers said it really worked well. There is one for small rodents like squirrels, chipmunks etc...

Have chipmunks all around my area. Homedepot has a Rat trap- but its not the kind with a wire that snaps close- it has a plastic housing with molded in teeth. You put a little peanut butter on the lever set it on the gorund - and set the trap with your foot- best trap I ever bought.

Cannot remember the name of it- its black and made for rodents larger than a mouse but smaller than large rats. I will look tonight to see if it has name on it.

Try a bowl of antifreeze. I have a drain pan with antifreeze in it under my bench. I'm always finding floaters (mice). This year after washing out my garage I found more mice droppings in the corner by the door so I put one of those poison blocks mentioned above, shure enough it was moved the next day. Whatever it was carried it about 2 feet away.

I just did the interior over in my Camaro. I really do not want any mice in their after the last mess they made.

I like the antifreeze cocktail idea.

I've had people tell me a bar or two of Irish spring soap in the car will keep them out of your interior.

Have -a-Heart makes a dedicated chipmunk trap. Ace Hardware carries them. They are pretty cheap. I had a chipmunk problem outside the house last year and caught 36 of the little varmints over a 2 month period. The bird feeders attracted them. I used bird seed to bait the trap. I did the humane thing with the cute little rodents :D

My family falls into the habit of leaving the garage door open all day. Every time they fall into that habit, some form of rodent moves into my garage. I have had chipmunk infestation twice. The only thing that takes care of them reliably is the "bucket o' death". I take a 5 gallon bucket and fill it half way with water. Then I put a plank like a ramp from the floor to the bucket's edge. Then, I put enought sunflower seeds into the bucket so that they can't see it has water in it, and think it is a bucket full of sunflower seeds. A few seeds spread on the plank help encourage Alvin to "walk the plank", and when he looks in the bucket he thinks "Holy Cow, I hit the jackpot!!!" and jumps in, Then, he drowns.

I don't love this method, as I would rather not kill them, and even if I were to kill them, I prefer an instant kill that they won't feel. But sometimes, the little critters leave me no choice.....
