Hurst shifter C4 6 Speeds
 

So I'm sure most of you know this shifter was discontinued quite sometime ago by Hurst. I guess less of the cars on the road = less sales and so on. Well, I have found a dealer who is trying to arrange a deal with Hurst to bring back that shifter in a limited run. So, if any of you are interested in this shifter send me a PM. I am only trying to help these guys out because it will benefit all of us who would like to have the shifter in our cars. I will simply pass the info along to them...thanks

The ZFDoc shifter has a shorter throw. Probably a better feel too.

Plus, I feel that Bill (ZFDoc) is a WAY better guy than Chris (the holder of the Hurst patent). FYI: I've talked to both more than once.

I'd recommend anyone wanting a Hurst to go with the ZF short-throw unit. It's what I have. JMO.

Loved my Hurst when I had it, didnt care for the B&M (they own Hurst) for the ZF6. Most will recommend what they bought or spent money on though.

After getting direct measurements between the two, it showed the ZFDoc unit would provide a shorter shift. Because I chose it and have it installed, I also know it has none of the issues commonly complained about re: the B&M unit.

FWIW, the handles are the same length. But the fulcrum below the pivot point is where the ZF unit has an advantage.

It's my understand that Bill and Chris both INDEPENDANTLY came up with their original designs almost simultaneously. Both had almost identical adjustments. A couple of years ago, Bill went back and added more fulcrum throw to see if he could shorten throw without creating excessive resistance (as complained about the B&M).

He (and I) believe he was successful. His shifter is so precise, I haven't missed a single shift since installing it 2k miles ago. Plus, it feels amazing compared to the OEM unit.

On the personal note, Chris has been independantly selling Hurst units via eBay ever since Hurst dropped it. But he won't go out of his way to assemble and ship you one if he hasn't got one ready. Bill is not that type of person. He will go out of his way to help you -- even when it's not in his financial interest.

Oh yeah,,,I posted measurements of all 3 shifters in a thread earlier this year. With a search on ZFDoc and my name, you should be able to easily find that thread.

The measurements will show the advantage and how Bill is still a long way away from the extreme config of the B&M.

you can send your whole shifter assembly to Bill; he'll rebuild it, replacing all the little pieces not normally associated with an aftermarket shifter. the result ? difference between night and day.

I've had the B&M Ripper in my 89 since they first came out and I love it.

I've only driven a C5 Z06 with the Hurst, but I preferred the B&M Ripper over it.

I have driven a C4 with the ZF Doc's shortened shifter in it as well and I thought it was crap. I put a B&M into a friend's car that he raced and a while later he sent his transmission off to ZF Doc and when he got it back it had his short throw shifter in it... he told my buddy that it was better, so I guess he just agreed to it. He didn't like it either...

Driven a Hurst C4 and a B&M C4, no experience with Bill's shifter.

B&M was too notchy for my taste in stop and go kind of driving, on a track car I would like it a lot more.

Hurst is sitting in my parts been waiting to get installed.

Ive never felt the zfdoc shifter, but I do have the Hurst shifter and can tell you its a quality piece. Not a simple install either, but rather something that you may want to do in conjunction with a clutch change or something of the like. The hurst instructions were incredibly detailed and some of the best instructions ive ever seen for an aftermarket part.

The shifter did shorten up the shifts some - remember if you shorten them up too more you make it extra notchy. Especially on our goofy zf transmissions where the shifter is farther away from the gears it shifts (as opposed to the t56).

You also should be aware that most of the short throw shifters elminate reverse lockout. So if your transmission (90-93? ) had a reverse lockout plate (you have to pull up on it before it will allow you to shift into 'R'), you will not have this unique feature any more.

Different trannies will act different with brand X y Z etc

Shorter doesnt always feel better but its subjective.

Did not care for the B&M on the ZF by far the shorter than the Hurst but too notchy and high effort; On the T56 the Hurst felt good over the stocker but the B&M although shorter feels better.
Different tastes...

The Hurst shifters are for sale on ebay for $169. Why not just buy one there?

I would guess Chris only had a limited supply of those shifters when Hurst discontinued them. SO for those of you who were interested in the shifter and that I PM'ed back with the ordering and contact info I did get confirmation the order is in and they will be built on a special run for these guys only
