1985 to 1986 Y Pipe

I wanting to swap out my Stock front Y pipe header exhaust it is a 1986I want to put a 1985 Front Y pipe and a fully bolt on type 1985 Main Cat from a 1985 will this bolt up to my 1986 rear Y pipe.

Also will it clear everything in front like stock 1986 did.

I can order a Y pipe for a 1985 with out precats in Ca but I can't order a Y pipe with out pre cats for a 1986 in Ca.

I would almost bet money it will fit .

Is there a question in there? I don't see a "?" anywhere, it helps people figure out what you want.

oldalaskaman 10-30-2010 06:12 PM

he wants to eliminate his pre cat's , some fabrication shops wont ship some parts to calif. unless theyre designated off road or actually came that way on the car, he wants to know if the earlier year and later year 'y' pipes are the same. I'm sure they are. There may be other issues, but all things being equal, they will fit.

The only caution I would have is the VISUAL inspection for your car. California has their head up their A** with this inspection. If it doesn't meet original specifications they MAY fail your car for SMOG.

What I found out 1984 and 1985 are 4 bolt cats and 1986 later are 2 bolts.

The 1984 and 1985 bolt on front and back The 1986 on have a slip fit in front and bolt on in ther rear of the cat.

So it mite work If I should get past smog with the 1985 Y pipe set up next time I try some long tube headers I have a place that mite let them go if all the smog plumbing hooked up still.

But baby steps what I can get away with here in the Land of BS smog rules.

Dont want the car real loud just a nice dont mess with me rumble the way Vetts should sound like.

You can get a front Y pipe with the 86 slip fittings without precats. Check Mid America. That's where I got mine.

If you use an 85 front Y pipe, you will also need an 85 Cat. The 85 cat will not work with the 86 rear Y.

I been looking at this hard for a while now but no where in the emission listing it states pre and main cats needed so I pushing it with a 3 ways main cat only I know others that have done this with there cars and get away with it.

I talked off the record with some local snog places car guys and they have told me if the long tube headers have all the smog fitting they and it passes the sniff test will let go though.

Mine's an 85. I converted to an 86 front Y so I could use a Corsa cat-back system. I run a single cat and it is not too loud.

Thanks

I am running Magna Flows with LT1 tips and Rear Y pipe with cross over Not loud at all a little louder would be no big deal.

I like the sound of the Corsa system but dont have that kind of extra cash as of now to purchase Corsa yet one day.

I have flowmasters and no precats, ...luvit,

John A. Marker 10-30-2010 08:57 PM

All of this depends on your ability to get past the SMOG police. A friend up in Sacramento pass the sniffer only to be FAILED because he had an adjustable fuel pressure regulator!

no 'i think maybe'

to use a 84/85 front y on 86+, cut 2 inches (includes cat flange) off the rear of the 85 pipe and have it squeezed (not internal expanded) back to round from the the 85 oval.

JrRifleCoach 10-31-2010 09:40 PM

The 85 Y-pipe is a bolt-in for the 86e. Except the outlet is different from the 86.

I'd pull your 86e Y and using it as a pattern, weld the outlet flange to the 85 Y.

Now everything will bolt up as expected.

i ditched the pre cats and main cat on my 86. I am running walker mufflers on a straight dual exhaust. Sounds good to me. Nice at idle and when you get on it. Quiet when cruising on hiway.

I guess I need to talk with some of the smog guys local to me then. If that's the case, I'm going for Hedman Elites!
