What if any weight reduction can I do to my vette?

I figure if the vette is like the f-bods there is some weight reduction that can be done from the stock trim. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jeff:

I'm wondering what is your objective in wanting to reduce the weight? Are you racing the beast and how serious are you in the weight reduction plan.

Here is a partial list to contemplate:

Racing seats, remove all interior trim and carpets, reduce fuel load to the minimum, get a racing battery, get lite racing wheels and tires, go on a diet, get a titanium exhaust system or some form of lite weight system, remove your cats, remove anything from your car that you don't absolutely need on the race track such as head lights, fog lights,
CD player, radio, headliner, sun visors, glove box, insullation, etc.

You ought to be able to lighten things up by at around 400 to 500 pounds, depending on how much weight you want to loose. :D

But if you get all of that stuff out ... it wont have anything that you can enjoy on the ride home ...

If you want to overcome the weight/HP ratio ... increase the HP ... it will help to reduce weight ... but not as much as more HP ...

Well, I really dont want to take it to extreme but usually in my f-bods I would start by taking the spare tire and jack out then emptying the windshield washer resivoir(sp?). I know the C5 doesnt have a spare and jack but what about things that can go un-noticed like sway bars, anything out from under the hood that isnt needed, etc... :chevy

Replace the mufflers with straight pipes. You will get a significant weight reduction.

If you can get any significant weight out of a C5 without otherwise ruining it for anything except racing, Chevy will be real surprised. As I understand it from reading "All Corvettes Are Red", they sweated the smallest details to keep the weight at 3000 lbs and STILL had to go over that number as they neared production.

This was discussed here a while back (over a year ago) and nobody could really come up with anything except the obvious (pass seat, carpets, exhaust) that would be reversible and not turn the car into a piece of chopped up junk.

Now if you REALLY want to lose weight, go ahead and do the chopped up junk routine. But don't plan on selling it.

And I wouldn't recommend removing the sway bars.

Mallett Fiber-glass hood (can be painted): -21lbs
Headers: -25lbs (for short tube, long tube should be even lighter)
Racing Seat (Sparco EVO): -25lbs +/-
CCW wheels: -2-8 lbs per wheel (depending on current wheels)
2 piece rotors: 1-2 lbs per wheel
Dilusi brakes F&R: -16 lbs (total)
Intake (Donaldson filter): ?lbs (but stock intake assembly is heavy!)
Racing Battery: -couple lbs
Specter Werkes C5 Door Hinges: -15lbs
Z06 or Race exhaust: -20-40 lbs.

Buying headers will save...believe it or not, about 25lbs! You can't imagine the amount of iron and it's weight that comes out when you go with long tube headers. Also, switching to non-runflat tires is worth about another 20lbs. 5lbs per tire. I weighed all this when I made these changes. :seeya

Don't forget to remove your AC, etc...

You can gut the entire interior if you're serious, but as asked before, "Why?" As you'll notice if you check many of the screwed on plastic parts, they are about as "light weight" (try flimsy) as imaginable, as is. Good luck!

Oh, yeah, in addition to all the suggestions, don't forget the entire sound system, heater/defroster parts, and air-bags!

I was talking to someone and they said something about filling the tank up before racing. Something to do with weight distribution. Any body heard this?

one thing to remember, depending on the type of racing and what class.
This past weekend, we had the GM Hi Tech Shootout, the rules stated all cars must have carpet, a factory appearing dash, two front seats, door panels and must be painted.
