suggest a scanner/datalogger
 

so I discovered that at some point my cheapo ODBII code scanner got smashed somehow.

This has been one of my best tools in the past 10 years so I am looking to get a new one.

I need suggestions for a new one but I know there are better versions such as data loggers, real time adjustments etc...

Try looking at autoenginuity. Being that your car is a 96 and OBDII, this could be an option. I have used it before at my job and had good results. Real easy to learn and datalog.

I use ECMpro from Westers Garage on my OBDII '96. It's not cheap but it will handle all the parameters (PID's) you can throw at it when data logging. Some of the cheaper units will only handle a couple or three with decent speed. This coupled with the Jet DST software I can do whatever I want with data logging and the tune. I tried Autoenginuity and it's a good scanner but wasn't fast enough for my data logging purposes. Of course you'll need a laptop for both of these.
