4-5 6 speed auto transmissions?
 

I am looking at replacing my motor and transmission early next year and I want to go to a 4,5 or 6 speed transmission but I would like to keep it automatic. I know next to nothing about transmissions or their part numbers but I was looking for one that will bolt in with a minimum of effort. I have a 1978 with a 3 speed auto right now. can anyone point me in the right direction?

I don't know about small price but it might be worth it. A little out of my proce range though. Maybe some more saving is in order. Are there any others?

i would have to say you limited to the 2004r and 700r4/4l60 (no e) trans's. i have a 2004r in my 81 and love it, was very easy to install.

The new 5 and 6 speed autos from gm are 100% computer controlled and would not be easy at all to swap in. I don't even think the 6 speed would even fit in the c3 trans tunnel, that thing is huge!!

Thanks for the help so far guys. What is the difference between the 700r4 and the 2004r? if the 5 and 6 speeeds are all computer driven then I guess I will stay with one of the 4 speeds.

there is a bit of alot different between the two, the 700 has a shorter first gear and has a wide spacing between first and second, there are more parts for the 700 and they can be made to take a good pounding, the 2-3 clutches tend to fail in these units. the trans is longer than any factory c3 trans and will require you to shorten the drivshaft. I'm not sure but i think you may have to mod the crossmember too.

The 200 has gear ratios close to a turbo350 you have now, except you have a taller 4th (0.67) and the gear spacing is almost perfect. they need a good builder to build one to handle a good deal of power, they have problem with the band failing early from slipping, but that can be handled in the aftermarket. the driveshaft doesn't need to be cut, but some cars need a moded crossmember (i know the 80-81 does) but i have heard the earlyer cars will reuse the crossmeber, the 2004r has the mount in the same spot as a turbo400. there are not a lot of converter selections for the 200 but i'm running a stock buick gn converter and love it. this unit stalls about 2500rpm and has lockup.

I am looking into the same thing...looking to add a transmission with minimal hassel and minimal modification to the car. I want something that can be fast off the line (not necessarily on the high end) but can still get decent mpg with lower rpms at 75mph vs. the stock 3 speed auto I have.

Any other suggestions or detail write ups?
