Check out this 490ho 383 crate engine...
Looks like they take a reman 350 Roller block and punch it out, clearance it, and stick in:
Forged Eagle crank Forged Scat I beams Forged flat top 10.3:1 pistons Bolt on NEW Edelbrock performer heads 64cc straight plug New camshaft (no brand??) (Roller?) New Edelbrock RPM air Gap Intake. New timing set And they tune it and Dyno it at or better than 490hp @ the crank, and will provide a dyno sheet for the engine For just a hair under 6K + shipping. Cam, heads, compression all look well ballanced. Forged pistons and crank, cool. Be nice to know what pistons are in it. 490 seems a little optimistic but maby...if you have the funds give them a call. Located in Spokane, intaresting, about 2 hours away.

Would like to see the dyno sheet. The Edlebrock heads are not know as one of the best flowing heads out there in their price range which prob explains the low lift cam they used |
Performer rpm heads 490 is hard to swallow probably no accessories on it either. Red talk to tpi421vette, get hooked up with a good set of heads, diff cam and youll get your 500 you want. lots of "happy" dyno aheets running around out there.

Edelbrock lists both the performer and performer rpm as 185cc. 238/156cfm and 240/162.
200cc e teck head and 240/242(!) .594 hyd roller, rpm air gap top end is listed by edelbrock as 460hp on a 383 bigger head and cam = less hp?! Graham Hanson's cyl head book dynos a 383 perf rpm top end with a 230/236 .500 at 390 hp hmmmm somethin is rotten in Denmark. I gotta agree with Cumbercr and Rodj. Crate engines compete on price vs advertised HP. That is bound to let a lot of quality fall through the cracks. BUT WAIT! THATS NOT ALL! add a Tornado intake device and there will be an astonishing 600hp and 60mpg!! (sorry couldn't help that one) |

My best of everything 383 with LE ported TFS 195 heads (275cfm @ .500 ) and a 234/242 540/560 cam made 410Hp at the wheels which allowing for driveline losses would put it close to the " claimed " output of the crate engine |
Got a reply to my Email this morning. He says that all they use are Keith Black Forged Icon pistons or Speed Pro Forged pistons. He says the cost for a set is the same either way, it just depends on the application and desired compression as to which they will use on a motor.
He said the cams are all Comp Cams full roller. Apparently they have to get full permissions from the manufacturers before they can advertise their products and those 2 didnt giver permission, the others did though. |

Youll make good low end with the 383 alone. Remember those range #s will vary depending in ci. Increasing CI may decrease your range meaning starts and ends earlier. Id say get a better head and use more lift
Either way it should be a good strong runner on the street. Performer heads are too small (170cc) on a 383 and performer Rpm honestly just wont let it breathe. It will still run good but the exhaust port is lacking and youre leaving a bunch on the table. If youre looking at the Eddy DQ setup I think Eddy has a package in mind its calibrated for if you want to see what they have in mind for it. Make your judgement call and go from there. They do sell recalibrate kits if you need to mod them slightly.Not a big deal |

I did look at the GMPP ZZ383, but again, its over 5K, and has Powdered rods and Hyper pistons, and a tiny cam, and to go with more cam you have to mod the heads and springs, etc...so a grand or more later. I need a Forged rotating assembly and no heads or intake, no cam, just a 383 shortblock to build off of...lol |
You want 400 at the tire so forget hypers. I mean they will physically work but stilso maybe the GM shorty isnt the one for you.
Youll probably buzz the thing over 6k to make that power. Seriously get yourself a good head and the right cam it will be easier that way. Have Jim build one for you all you have to do it pick up the phone send money and wait bet it makes more power and torque than you planned. Building your own and saying "I did it" is one thing but imo in this case its best to have someone do it that does it a lot and already knows what to use for your expectations, budget and has the tools/assembly tricks down pat. Take the guesswork out of it and get it done so you can start driving. |

Things I know I need without question. 4bolt 383 block from summit, its a great starting point and needs no further machining at all. Edelbrock DQ setup, this covers the intake, carb, linkages, air filtration, etc.. AFR Heads, 210cc intake, 75cc exhaust, race ready..http://www.airflowresearch.com/produ...products_id=85 Then for a cam, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-GK12-601-4/ I like the RPM range on it, Comp has more choice than Lunati, and this one looks good. Just cant justify 1200 bucks for a Roller cam kit.. The rotating assembly, I cant find the # now, but with those heads, should land me around 10.7:1, Forged rods, pistons, and Crank, 5.7" rods. Thoughts? |
