Original L88 Hood
 

Hi,

A friend of mine has an original L88 hood that he is thinking of selling and had a few questions. The hood has been in storage for the last 40+ years. Any information would be appreciated.

1)Is there an L88 specific forum or web-site?
2)What price range would be fair?
3)Are there any numbers or tell tale things to prove that it's an original?

I'm looking to buy a L88 hood, but hoping to find one closer to home....and for ALOT less than $1500.

But non-the-less, im interested in the one you mention.

I've seen originals go for $1500+ on Ebay. And I think Ebay is a place where the value will seek a fair level.
If the highest price isn't that important and he doesn't want to worry about shipping, Craig's List and forums are best.
Hope he's not charging storage fees!

original? came off a true L88 car?

they only made 196 of them in 68-69? you would be lucky to find one ever.... I would ask several grand for it...

That's the car number, you could buy a L88 hood at a Chevy dealer until they ran out of production.....however a real one should command a reasonable price merely because there are no more available....but only if real, not aftermarket and would only fit 68-72 cars because the L88`s were 68 and 69 production wiper door cars

If nice it will bring $1500 easy but lucky you it won`t fit your car...

FWIW: an original 68-69 L-88 hood will not fit the car in your avatar. Too short.

GM hoods can be identified best by the construction and the nut plate rivets.

All GM hoods where press molded, giving them a smooth top and underside. After market hoods are usually hand laid glass, so the underside is rough, like the inside of a boat hull.

The original rivets are flat, smooth and solid (no hole in them). The rivets used in repro hoods are usually more domed, and have a hole through the center of them.

$1,500 seems to be about the going rate for advertised and "auction site" GM L-88 hoods, though I have seen decent ones at swap meets for a $1,000-$1,200.

I agree......wont cover the wiper cowel area.........tks for the heads up.....forgot OEM L88's are shorties.

I found my press molded L88 hood on the auction site for $380. plus shipping. The air box had been opened up some so it would clear a carb mounted air cleaner with lid, so not perfect.

I also have a short L88 style hood on my 70, and would like to be able to determine if it is an aftermarket hood or an original. Anything else to look for besides the rivets? It fits perfectly, has a Z shaped support in the air intake opening, and has a oddly located hole a few inches in diameter adjacent to the round air cleaner opening. I will try and post a picture.
