Wide molding project on 84-90 project I am doing.

I'm doing a 95 body conversion on my 1990 project car. However I really dislike the 91-up front bumper but we all know of the belt line differences. Today I bought a set of 91-up door moldings and was surprised to find when layed in the bumper groves it provides a very clean look and if you got the bends around the bumpers you would have a near factory look believe it or not.

Two door pieces if you spliced them in the center of the front bumper are enough to do the job and same on the back bumper. I however have a 95 rear bumper but still am posting pics of the 91-up molding on the 84-90 rear bumper.

with a little time and patience you can eliminate the ugly thin black beltline molding. I will update this thread as I work out the bending and splicing bugs. But to me doesn't seem to hard.

If you prefer the 84-90 side fenders look. No problem again with some work the 91-up door molding with fill that area perfectly as well.

Any tips on working with whatever this molding is made of is appreciated.

How are you going to bend the moldings around the corners?

Heat gun?

thinking notching the molding a bit the using a heatgun. The door molding will bolt to the front bumper so it will never release due to back to back tape or similiar adhesives not holding.

Heat gun?

I only showed the 84-90 rear bumper for people who want to ditch the thin molding and retain the original bumpers. I added a 91-up rear bumper to this 1990 but prefer the 1990 front bumper over the 91-up front bumper. If I can get the door molding to bend around the corners of the front bumper I will have a nice factory looking wide molding on my 90 front bumper.

I also forgot to add unlike aftermarket stuff the factory door moldings bolt in place just like the front original beltline molding did. However the spacing is different so new holes must be drilled into the bumpers grove. Perhaps when done a fiberglass mold could be made of it.

I am going to buy a few extra strips and will update this as progress is made.

Not sure if a thread like this has ever been started, I never checked but if it's been done you can lock this.

I've searched 100's of aftermarket pictures and non seem like they would provide the fit and looks of a modified door side molding.

Any of you have some cheap 91-up door molding you want to sell?

jeffp1167 02-12-2011 08:19 AM

Well, I bought another set of door moldings for 45.00 so probably next weekend I will try and make the front bumper molding mod work.

Its too bad the rear bumper moldings for the 91-95 ZR-1s are so difficult to find,a little bit of work and you could use those for the rear bumper.

I did use them on my stock 90 rear bumper cover and they fit very nice. Just have to bend them is all. I've seen a few guys fill the molding areas on a 84-90 and to me it doesn't look to good. once bent/shaped the 91-up door moldings in place of the thin beltline molding looks like it came from the factory the fit is that good.

That should have been 91-95 ZR-1.

ain't the bumper moldings on the 91-95 zr1 integral to the cover like the base 91-96 bumper cover on a base vette?

no, they are separate.. but plan to pay $1000+ for a used set

the 90-95 rear ZR-1 bumpers are the same, the molding was just changed

Thanks, my vette guy wasn't home this weekend so didn't get to pick the new set of door moldings up. Going out there next weekend and get them & buy a heat gun. The white ones I used in the pictures can't be messed with since they are for my doors.

I will try doing the back bumper as well and even mount it on my car so you all have a better idea on the fit of it.

interesting, Please keep us posted

not to flame jeffp1167's effort here, but i'm one that likes the black belt line. to me, its part of the character of the early c4's. i am though, interested in seeing jeff's final modification, and the technical details of how he did it . i might even learn something here. i'm sure it will give the early models a rather unique look.:thumbs: on the mod jeff, but i just like the black molding - (hey, its my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions - :D).

here's a pic of a 93, that the owner went the opposite direction - painted his belt line black -

Very interesting idea Jeff. Hopefully you can make it work. The paint is probably going to flake when you bend the molding.

If you happen across a set of white door moldings let me know. I'm trying to swap mine out too.
