How do I adjust the shift-point's in my TH-350?

Is this something that can be done by adjusting a bolt or a cable? And does the tranny have to be opened or pulled to do this? I'd like to adjust my shift point down about 500-800 RPM's because the engine quits after about 3600 RPM's.

Thanks,
Matt

First , if your engine is done @ 3600 RPM, shift point should be @ 3800 RPM, to stay within your power band. That is if you are talking about wide open throttle shift points. B&M makes an adjustible shift governor kit that only requires removing the shift governor cover, changing springs and weights to your desired shift points, and you're gone. I taylor these for people at the drag strip in about 10 minutes. I own a 70 Buick GS 455 Stage 2 that runs 10:50s in drive without having to shift. Manual shifting showed no improvement. Plus the car is brutally consistant. Don't get me wrong, it takes some playing with to get the right combo of weights & springs, but its worth it . Keep a record as you chart shift points, as in colors of springs-weight numbers,to shift point. How abaout an adjustable vacuum modulator?
I got one for my TH350 from Advance Auto for about $12.
It's just a "tin can" on the front passenger side of the trans that has an adjusting screw to move the shift points up or down the RPM range.

have you tried adjusting your foot? let up for 1/2 second and it will shift.

"let up [off the gas] for 1/2 second" -- NEVER!

BTW, how was your "TH400 recalibrated to shift at 5700 in D"?

MagicFingers described it above. Kit cost $28 from B&M. very easy to do. i got lucky and got it on the first try.
Golden80- just twitch your foot until you get around to fixing it. Clogged cat? fouled plug? bad wire? worn out? No good running c3 shifts below 5000 floored.

Am I missing somthing here

My stock L48 shifted at 4500 until I got the heads ported and bigger valves and Perf manifold. Shifts at about 5400 now. :)

If your engine's power is dying at 3600 RPM, I'd fix that first. Do a tune-up or better yet get a bigger cam and do some performance upgrades. This will do more than changing your shift points. Thats just my opinion.

The engines got over 100K on it and is getting tired. I just want to play with it at the dragstrip on Saturday to see what it will pull so that I'll be able to compare it to my ZZ4 when I get it next fall.

I haven't been drunk for 26 years

I'm not a master tech, but are you thinking that he's not shifting at all at WOT? It sounds like the problem is not that the transmission isn't shifting, but that he wants to change the shift point from around 4100-4400 RPM to 3600 RPM. Yes/No

This was all at WOT.

Well I found why it was dying after about 3700 RPM. Before today it would get up to 3700 and then stop accelerating. It would not get into 2nd unless I'd let off the gas. Needed a new air filter and a carb tune up. The cars pulling good to 4500 now. The yellow line on my tach is at 4500 for the 305. I adjusted the float a little and also adjusted the mixture control solenoid since it's a computer controlled QJet. But I think the big thing was the new air filter. The old one was pretty grungy and don't worry...I slapped myself for not changing it sooner. The car feels a heck of a lot better since it can breathe now.
