TSP 228R and milled heads?

I am wondering about installing a set of milled patriot LS1 casting heads along with a TSP 228R cam on my stock LS1.
My friend basically wants my 317s I have on my built boost motor I have sold, so he would trade me straight up for those and I would swap the patriots onto my Vette. So in the end all this really is costing me is a set of head gaskets as I have some ARP studs.

Would I need to fly cut the pistons?

The heads have been milled to 58CC and I would be installing .055 Compressed gaskets (if possible)

Also if I did my math right from 67milled to 58cc looks like about 0.05 has been milled off the heads.

This would put me at 11.3:1 compression.

The cam is a 228/228 .588/.588 114lsa.

Thanks for any input.

I think that is the same cam I have with un-milled stock LS-6 heads and currently no problems. It was installed by the previous owner but I plan to remove the stock heads and install ported versions and I will check Piston to Valve Clearance then. In your case, with milled heads, and the longer duration, higher lift cam, I would always check Piston to Valve clearance to be safe. I think around .060" intake and .080" exhaust minimum clearance would be OK. This may require you to flycut the pistons.

ya if I have to fly cut the pistons I will have to pass up this sweet deal, I would rather not buy tools and thicker gaskets just for a good deal. Id rather buy new proper fitting heads if thats the case!

another alternative would be maybe some cometic 0.086 gaskets but thats pretty thick! That would give me back about .035 of the milled head.

I am picking up a 03 C5 in a couple of days. It has stock pistons with AFR 205's milled to 58cc and a 23x, 23x .615 cam. No issues with it. Has 11.3 CR. Not sure of the head gasket thickness yet though.

I have that same cam @ 112LSA and love it. Call Texas Speed with your fly cutting questions, those guys are great.

I seriously doubt that you'd need to flycut with that combo, but you can always measure. That cam isn't that large, and being on 114 helps clearance.

I decided to pass the deal to another friend and wait to get a set of heads matched better, bc future may involve a rear mount 76mm stll
