I put my 85 up for sale yesterday.

I woke up with wild hair and figured, Ive had it for 9 years, time to let it go to its next owner.

It was my very first car, first car I hit triples in, first race I ever won in, etc...I vividly remember the day I got it, in 2002, I remember the firsttime I drove it solo was with 4 bald tires, in the rain..good times.

I hate to see it go, but it needs so much work, and its worth so little, and I guess deep down Im just a little bored with it, and its time to move on. Ill always remember it, in a sense it defined my teenaged years...and kept me busy at all free moments.

Lady is coming out tomorrow to look at it, and if she passes Ive got about 12 people that are wanting to come get it...

:iagree:

The big question here is; Whats next? A C5 or C6?

Take a picture of the woman, if she is ugly just post in facebook not here.

Just dump it and move on, avoid a project car this time that you can enjoy and mod a little at a time so youre not constantly working on it.

1500, no engine, no trans, ragged interior, rough paint, bald tires...but "clean" in the sense it hasnt been cut on or dropped, or wrecked. Really, to get it driveable all one would need is a engine/trans...

People always poop on the TH700R4, but mine was always dead reliable and i loved how firmly it shifted, so I figured I may as well keep it.

Any "lessons learned"? There seems to be a lot of wisdom in the advice to buy the lowest mileage, best condition C4 you can find.
Good luck with the sale and be sure to recommend the Forum to the new buyer.

Sad to hear. Your doing the thing I cant seem to do with my 84. Ive got at least double what its worth into the car and it still has drive train problems, paints chipped and bubbled, seats and carpet ripped and faded and it leaks when it rains. But I seem to just love the car. haha Oh well.
:leaving:
Can we get some pics and a location?

Not really..

Paid 8K for it in 2002, 106K miles on it when I got it. Car was clean.

After Hs I just didnt have the cash flow to take as good a care of it as Id have liked and as a result the car slid downhill slowly, the finisher was when the engine had t obe pulled, had 8psi oil pressure and was going through oil like a fat kid in a all you can eat buffet.

Interior went to hell after it sat untouched in the florida sun for 2-3 years.

And I love a project...if I was buying this car as it is now, Id be pleased..but Ive done this car, we've danced and Its time for something new.

So, what's your new ride gonna be? Another Vette? Ricer? Minivan? Maybe one of those "Dumbfortwo" golf carts?

I want another C4, prefer a Convertible, L98, 6 speed or 700R4...must be red.

I found a decent one in town, 91 Red/Red/white vert, 160K miles, started and ran but its been sitting in a warehouse for a while and when it cranked up it had a little engine noise. Could be timing chain, lifter, piston slap...but it wasnt a bearing, as I heard it. Oil pressure was perfect. No smoke at all, idle was rough, gas is stale from sitting.

Interior was very clean, exterior was in need of paint and the only real negative point on the car was the car has been clipped on the LF corner, and while the bumper was fine and still lines up perfectly, the hood was busted.

He was asking north of 3K for it...Im prepared to offer 1500.

If you don't get a C4 or a corvette at all, have you thought about buying a camry? They are pretty quick might even be faster than your old 85 vette. What happened to the engine and trans from your 85? Did you pull it to be rebuilt and found out how much it was going to cost and then parked your vette?

cv67 03-05-2011 09:37 PM

RED no offense, you started a number of threads asking about crate 350s 383s, dual quads etc ..maybe it cost too much or youre tired of your car which you say needs a lot.

But this vert sounds like ouside of interior needs everything too and has a zillion miles on it, imo youre switching out one $ pit for another. What about dumping your car, saving a few thousand more and getting one thats not wrecked with lower mileage and you can just enjoy? You are obviosly someone who doesnt mind wrenching but damn that car is going to bleed you dry just like the 85 did. It appears as if youre hoping to score a deal on a cheap Vette sink a few bucks and drive off into the sunset, that rarely happens. Weve all done something similar at one point or another, most times it doesnt work out.
If you want an LT1 car theres plenty of decent ones in the 6-8k range, Even if you went vettless for a yr or two if would pay off

The main problem was, I had a specific goal in mind for the 85, and to achieve said goal Id have had to sink nearly 16K into it, plus the purchase price, and It only had 5K less miles than the 91 does.

What I didnt like was the fact that I was going to make alot of concessions from keeping the car close to original, carbs, analog gauges, etc..and when I sat back and looked at it, I wasnt sure I could be happy with the car I was going to end up with, and I couldnt risk that kid of money on it.

So I figure, paid 8K for it, put 50K miles on it, had many many long hours of fun with it, time to move on...I got my moneys worth.

The 91 is a project, but it is in so much better shape than the 85. the Interior is clean except a rip in the bolster on the drivers seat, dash is very clean, Started and ran. It needs paint just like the 85 did, the only diff is the hood needs t obe replaced, thankfully there is a vette boneyard about 2 counties over.

Id rather put 16K into the 91 vert than an 85 coupe....honestly.

But I think I can get the 91 vert in good condition for less than 16K.

And my dream of a DQ 383 was hopefull at best, it just wasnt practical.

RED-85-Z51 03-06-2011 02:22 AM

This is the actual car Im considering purchasing...

The fender panel is in the passengers seat, was removed for batt access. The corner and fog lights are in the back end, as well as one healdight assembly, one headlight assembly was damaged.

It would be cheaper if you just buy a little better vette, that looks like a serious money pit. Spend an extra $2000 and you will be much happier.

Spend 1500 or 3500, or even 5000...its still going to be high mileage, with an old interior, and qwerks, unknown history, and about a 95% chance its going to need paint. It is a C4 afterall:D Thats why we own them isnt it?

Hell my 85 was clean as a whistle when I got it, but needed an interior then at 106K miles and 16 years old, needed engine work, and the A/C didnt work, Alt went out soon after buying it, all the weather stripping was shot...and it was as clean of a 85 as I could find locally, and it cost 8,000 from a Corvette specific dealer...

Bottom line, you're writing the check, it's your choice.
