Every dark cloud has a silver lining? LSX swap?
Recently I posted a short video of my engine. A tuner came over and game a base tune. We set the valves warm..they were nice and quiet. We drove it around a bit then called it a night. He mentioned the valves sounded a little loose when returned. Long story short I lost a few lobes on the cam and oil pressure. Time to rebuild the bottom end. It only had about 3-5k on it.
SOOO... I was thinking maybe it's time for and LSX swap. Right now its up in the air. The biggest issue for me would be making the A/C work. |
Give the folks at Corvette Central a call. I was at a demonstration at Carlisle a couple of years ago where a couple of their guys had done this swap into an 87 and seemed to have figured out the problems such as engine mounts, fly by wire throttle, transmission adaptor, AC, power steering, cruise control, cooling and instrumentation. The only problem they could not figure out was how to get the gas mileage display to work.

I'm still up in the air about the LS swap. It is my first choice but it would obviously be easier and cheaper to rebuild. Thanks for the info.

If an aftermarket company would come up with step-by-step instructions to do an LSX swap that came with a kit containing the necessary parts I think they would get a lot of business!

Heres my take on it:
1. If your plans are FI > 600 rwhp mega boost, mega HP, then an SBC or LTx, with blowerworks hardware is the way to go. This is the route ive chosen on my 93 c4. 2. If your plans are N/A <600 rwhp, roadrace, autoX, then go Lsx. dont forget the weight savings ! |
sorry to hear of your troubles. did your engine have a factory roller cam ? and the lobes failed in less than 5,000 miles ? Not saying I wouldn't do an LSX swap if I was in a position to do so, but I'd investigate what caused the original failure and maybe reinstall a new (hotter?) cam. Was it a metallurgical failure ? an oiling problem ? grossly misadjusted or defective lifters ?

That's very strange i have been in fear of that and many more things but if i were you rebuild it or not i would like to know the source What hapenned ! |

The head gasket was blown. I replaced the head gaskets had the heads redone and a new cam.I topped it off with LT runners then the HSR. It ran fine for a good 1k. I was disappointed in the power so I put a set of GMPP Fast burn heads on it it was apart for something like 6 months the second time.This is an estimate I'm not sure. After I put the heads on I had to get different exhaust and mod a Vortec HSR to fit. I put it back together and drove it one day after we tuned it. Then it lost oil pressure. I will be taking it appart this weekend. This has never happened to me before but it has happened to friends that are more savvy than I. Maybe the Hot Rod Gods intended for me to get an LS1. :D |

You might enjoy looking at my thread on the tech form entitled "LT1 conversion to LS3 hot cam". Just go to my profile and look for the threads I've started. You can also google "C4orce2" and go to my photobucket. It has an album entitled "build of C4orce2" with a lot of pictures of the build. The swap was not quick or cheap, but well worth it.
