? about my valve covers.

I've been debating on repainting my valve covers come spring since the paint had melted down to the magnesium. However some of my Facebook friends had said to keep the natural magnesium finish. What does anybody think?

its a personal choice, painted my covers , tubes and plenum, its your car , do what you want.

personally, i would keep the magnesium. original castings have some sort of sandy-textured finish, that over time, shows it's age. several larger parts vendors carry a color matching spray that will give the covers a face lift. if the textured coating is in sad shape, the covers should be stripped to the bare casting, and refinished. the textured coating is available from eastwood. several years ago, i refinished the covers on my 85 - here's a link that covered aluminum engine parts and magnesium valve covers -

I replaced mine. I just could not get them to look like I wanted.

I just picked up an 88 ANC that I swear the original owner mush have never ever cleaned under the hood... and the Valve covers honestly look like crap and the underside of the hood (fender liners and hood itself need some serious cleaning ...

I own 5 other Corvettes and am proud to open the hoods BUT this car I'd be embarrassed to do that...

Feels strange for a wrench like me but my first project (not yet completed) was to buy 6 rolls of aluminum foil to wrap around anything I do not want to paint.....

When I did the fuel injectors, I had the intake plenum and runners cleaned and bead blasted. They came back super clean and made the valve covers look nasty. I bought some bead blasted valve covers from a forum member and while they were spotless, the color didn't match the plenum and runners. I bit the bullet and painted the intake and covers with a high temp silver and detailed them both with red. I love the way it looks and if I want it back to original, I just take it to the blaster again.

I am getting ideas here. For one thing my Vette is more of a driver than a show car, but I do go to the bigger shows and rarely open my hood unless somebody asks. I'm also debating on a set of chrome covers in the future.
