Dana 36 vs 44 Rear End

What is the difference between the Dana 36 & 44,

Weaknesses and strengths or Pros & Cons

I bought a rear end, i thought it was a Dana 44, it turns out it is a 36.

I will be running a 350ci engine around 320h.p. & 380ft lbs torque with a Automatic Trans. & maybe changing from 3:07.1 to 3:54.1 gears.

It will be a daily driver.

Seems like a lot of people here have changed or are changing from the Dana36 to a Dana44.

Can a Dana36 Rear end, live with a auto trans and mild 350 V8?

I Inspected my Dana 36, and noticed the spider gears are missing most of their teeth.

Any feed back would be appreciated

Thanks

Westgl

44 has 8 1/2" ring gear, 36 is more like 7 3/4. The Dana 36 should be fine at your power level. Hard launches on slicks will kill it though. While you have it apart replace the clutch pack. They do wear out.

You do read here once in awhile about someone blowing a D36, D44s not to often, and if they do, its because of big HP and big slicks...WW

On the street you'll be fine:thumbs:

If you go to the track with sticky tires you could be in for a problem.

You will be fine on the street with the Dana 36 7-7/8" ring gear C4 diff.

Use a GL-5 or GL-6 rated gear oil.
I prefer synthetic gear oil.
Mineral - dino gear oil ok too.

Don't forget the GM Limited slip additive from your local GM dealer.
Need 1 bottle of that additive for the Posi-traction unit.

Buy a Master rebuild kit.
Will have all bearings, shims, ect.

Buy a dana 36 positraction clutch pack.

Only buy spider gears or side gears if yours are heavily worn or trashed.
If yours are in nice condition yet, reuse them.

Need $$$. lol

Good luck finding a C4 Dana 44 with batwing, driveshaft, C-beam for $400 or less.

Not here on C4, ebay, or in the USA.

See asking prices for up to and over $2,000 lately for C4 dana 44 & all hardware for a true bolt in swap.

This is a new rear end to me

I just bought this rear end from Ikerds.

i asked them to inspect and make sure to send me a good one, I thought they would send me a good used one, But the spiders are missing most of there teeth.

I thought i was getting a Dana 44 but they sent me a 36.

it is not exactly what I expected, i did not expect to have to rebuild it after paying so much for it.:ack:

What did you pay for it?

Its a boat anchor with broken spider gears.

Should have been free to you.

westgl 03-10-2011 09:50 PM

Bad Spider gears

I bought a complete rear suspension from Ikerds for $950.00 + $280.00 shipping.

I inspected all the control arms, rear spring, half shafts, rear brake disc's, calipers, and rear suspension Corner right & left.

I am building a project vehicle

Call them back, Ikerd's.

Talk to the owner.
State the spider gears are in very bad condition.
Broken.

See what he can do to make it right with you.
You did not get a fair deal.

Unless you are happy with broken spider gears.
I would not be.

You and I are not dead yet.
Our country is not run by communists just yet.
We still have rights. lol

:iagree: with Brian, you can't let them get away with something like that. Im sure if you call them and tell them whats going on they will take care of it for you. They probably just pulled the rear and sold it without opening it up for inspection. You also said you thought you would get a D44, not a D36. They may of screwed up and sent the wrong rear by accident.. You need to get this straightened out ....Call them!!!! :toetap:WW

westgl 03-11-2011 11:06 AM

Thanks Guy's,
I talked to Ikerd they said it should not have gone out that way.

But the funny thing is that (they shipped everything in separate boxes 5ea. to get under the shipping weight) the Pumpkin by it self, in it's own box separate from the batwing, it was Easy to look right in and see the damage, especially as Clean as it was.

Oh well Mistakes happen, at least they will make good on it.

Thanks
Westgl

I have broken too many 7.625 geared rear ends. One set of 4.10 gears broken, 1 set of 3.73 broken and one set of 3.73 where the pinion bearings spun on the rear end. In my Vette, within a few months, I found my 3.08 gears that were stock had a break when I was installing the D44.
