cross member cutout?
 

I am having a blast getting my numbers matching '64 frame repaired and upgraded (gusset's to motor mounts etc. GM mods, full welded) and have started to think about the tranny cross member cut out. Pros - cons of such a mod would be appreciated as well as pictures. I will be posting many pictures soon as I have a limited amount of time to get this job done, completion has been priority. Once I get the rolling chassis done and the body back on with bottom repairs completed, the car will go to my buddy for repairs and a three month primer dry. As soon as my work is done 2.5-3 weeks I promise to entertain everyone with all my screw ups and screwy jig idea's. thanks for the info, Keith

Van Steel made up a bolt-in trans crossmember for the "King Ray" '67 project car five years ago; don't know if they still offer it or not. :thumbs:

the factory did this for the auto cars and i wish they did it for all of them!
there are many ways to do it and i think there is a diagram on the forum on how to use the welded in one and convert it.
if someone makes a unit for one that is frame off, i would highly recommend it

Crossmember surgery
 

After installing a Tremec transmission hanging off the end of the latest
engine iteration, I later found that the trans. could not be removed without taking out the motor! As I am running side exhausts, I had
an expert fabricator (Randy Matthews, Nipomo, CA) section out the
middle14" of the weld-in crossmember (right in the middle of the exhaust circles) and weld matching plates that now bolt in place with
8 3/8 inch bolts. No change in frame measurements, and no looseness
or rattles. Trans drops right out now.

The cleanest way is to get an auto. crossmember. Or cut your stock one out right to the frame rails and copy the factory auto. mounts. I did this one for one of my cars.

I have an Automatic donor frame and my rusted out 4speed frame that I need to merge into one good frame. Any tips on what to do with the factory donor Automatic trans mount to install my factory 4 speed? Or hopefully the new 5 speed? I have been contemplating what to do with the trans mount.
