Headlight Motor Switch wire color codes
I purchased a replacement headlight motor connector and switch from electric limited. The color codes on the new connector are completely different from the wiring in the car. Has anyone rewired one and can you share what color goes to what on the wiring.

Howdy,
I can't help with the specifics, but perhaps this excellent DZVette document will help clarify the inner workings. http://www.lbfun.com/warehouse/tech_...ket-Switch.pdf Jeff |

Is this the connector in question (Headlight bucket roll-over)?
If so, one pole is up the other is down and the black is ground. It can only plug in one way. I can shoot you a pic later if that will help. In the meantime someone else may chime in. Can you shoot a pic of the connector you have? Dave Z 2nd pic added to show general location of connector on dash harness. |
That is the connector I have except the colors are different. Mine are Blue, Red and Brown in the same order as yours. Do you know which wire is up and which is down on the connector. Looks like my ground is the Blue which is your black. I can use the wiring diagram to determine the color code on my car. Thanks in advance for all the help. I have replaced everything in the headlight circuit and the connector is the last part. Problem is I left the switch hanging while touching up the black paint on the dash and the wires came out of the connector. found switch and connector on the floor.

Here's a shot from under the dash. The green is on the left, red is probably center, and black with yellow stripe in the left. I dropped the screws out but couldn't back the switch out due to interference with the column support bracket. The other shot shows the mess I found that led to the purchase of the new switch. Nice job, eh! It does give some indication of the wire placement. Note that the connector is cocked to one side when plugged into the switch.
Hope that helps. Dave Z P.S. Are the wires in your existing harness red, green and Blk/Y? |
Dave,
Thanks for all your assistance. My existing wiring is green, red and yellow. Now that I have identified ground and red in the middle I have what I need. |

Now that I look back at this, none of the wires are grounds. The red brings power in and the green and yellow are for up and down.
In the attached diagram that MagicV8 (Dave W) sent to me, dark green is for down and yellow is for up. Switch marked "Headlamp Assy. Sw." (lower right). I suspect as long as the common red feed gets to the right pole you'll be able to figure which wire is for up and which is for down. That heavy red wire should have the 20-amp circuit breaker in line. Hope you get 'er back together. DZ |
