Difference between LT1 and L82 valve covers?
Hi
I am trying to pair up my late 1977-82 L82 aluminium right valve cover with a left one and was offered early 1970 #3989005 LH valve cover. What is the difference between early and late aluminium covers? Can I mix and match these covers? I am not bothered about originality as I will polish the set anyway. Paul |
The 78-80 L-82 aluminum valve covers, are the same as 69 350/350, 70-72 LT-1 and 73-77 L-82 covers, except that they're painted black.
81 L-81 and 82 L-83 valve covers are magnesium, not aluminum. Where as the 78-80's are painted black, with the tops of the fins left natural, the 81-82 covers are painted black with the tops of the fins painted light gray. Because they're magnesium, removing the paint from 81-82 covers, will result in a pair of covers that will corrode and oxidize easily. |

Hi,
Just to clarify, There is a slight difference in the 71-72 LT-! left-side cover from the 69-70 left-side cover that I'm aware of... it's set up for a push-in rubber oil cap, not the twist-in cap. I don't believe its possible to interchange the cap. Probably only matters to 3 people in the whole world. Regards, Alan |

Hi gg,
The 'over the counter' set I bought in 71 had the baffles, drippers, and push in plug. I very rarely see the 'push-in' plug valve cover for sale. Just happens David Mayhew has (had?) a nice set for sale on the parts forum. Regards, Alan |

Thank you for your input.
The one I was offered is the twist-in oil cap style and in need of restoration. This cover is perfect for my application as I will polish the set anyway. Just awaiting for shipping cost Paul P.S. David, your set of coveres on the parts for sale CF is stunning. |
The 005 cover is the push in cap and it is smooth round and will not interchange with the Stant twist type cap. These are on my unrestored original 44k mile 71 LT1
