400 RWHP / Daily Driver - TIRES??
Sorry to add another "tire" thread here - I did a little searching and didn't find quite the answer I need, although my search skills are probably VERY rusty (used to hang out a LOT here, now not so much)
Anyway, summer's coming and my run-flats are shot! I need new tires, but WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND for my car? Specs / use are as follows: modifications are in my signature, but my car is dyno'd at 400 RWHP - however, I don't drag race or take it to the track - my car has a Yank 3200 SS stall converter that I've never really been able to test, but I'd like to (haven't been able to hook-up w/ runflats); I have 3.73 gears in rearend of the car I like to be able to break the wheels loose now and then, but traction / launch is probably more important, given the stall converter and gears I do NOT need / want run-flats - given the ALMOST complete lack of flat tires I've had in my life, I'll take my chances on not getting a flat car occassionally sees HIGH speeds for short distances (gotta let them horses free occassionally!) car is ONLY driven in summer time (May - October if lucky) and does NOT see snow; sees rain when it rains Probably most importantly, I drive the car as my daily driver - I live about 7 blocks from my work (5 minute drive, if that at speed of 20 mph) - I do drive the car on highway a lot, usually distances of 50 - 85 miles one way so, what tires are best for my intended purposes? THANKS for your recommendations!! |
My take....BFG KDW's
They are lasting longer than I would have thought. |
I have Nitto NT555R's on the back of mine.

I think toyo r888 or ra1s are the way to go. A couple of my buddies have them and so do I and they are great!!!

I have Hankooks ventis v12 on my 400+ rwhp and like them.
|
I have Vredestein (sp) on my C4 and they are very good in all factors.

Bfg kdw 2

I have Kumho Ecsta ASX non run-flats on mine, probably 30k miles on them. The rears have probably 25% tread left, and the fronts over 50% ! They are a great bargain, and they are much more quiet than the stock tires. FWIW, I also cut 1.9 60fts on my 6 speed car with them. I think I had them installed/balanced for $650 for all 4 corners.

They are lasting longer than I would have thought. Two sets in the last 80,000 miles, and this set has has a lot of miles, and smiles left. 420hp here, and drive 80 miles a day. |

Sorry, I forgot about the set that was on the car when I got it.
They do wear very well if you do not spin your tires. I do drive like a old man. |
I'm a big fan of the KDW 2. Great all around tire. They make a little road noise, but if you have aftermarket exhaust or longtubes you wont ever hear it.

I like my R888. I'm just under 600 rwhp I also live in the Pacific North wet (west) Drive with them year round, they are actually pretty good in the rain. Here a pic of them before install. rears are 305/18

Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs. Stickiest street tire I have ever used. Good on wet roads, too.

I have Nitto NT555R II's 305/35/18. They are r-compound tires so they get sticky for that traction you want but they have a reinforced sidewall for handling. They come brand new with 6/32 tread so they are manageable in the rain if you happen to get caught in it. The tire is considered a "road-racing" "competitive" tire. The life is obviously going to be less than a traditional street tire but you will get the traction and handling that you want and I have heard of some getting 15-20k miles out of them with occasional track time and numerous heat cycles. Plus they are decently priced on discount tires at the moment. Good Luck man! :flag:
