Depends on who owns them.

Technically, the 69-76 model years are Stingrays due to the fender scripts. 68s and 77 up do not have the scripts.

Regardless, they are all C3s.

69-76 had the word Stingray in chrome on the fender. Word originated with C2's but back then it was two words, Sting Ray.

Above the gills/scoops on the sides of the front fenders on 69-76. One word "Stingray" in chrome script.

63 to 67 is a Sting Ray, but not a Stingray. A 68 is neither a Sting Ray or a Stingray, but in reality I guess it kind of is a Stingray, even though it doesn't say Stingray on it. 69 to 76 is a Stingray, but not a Sting Ray. 77 to 82 is not a Stingray, or a Sting Ray, but looks like a Stingray, so I guess in a way it is a Stingray. Even though it doesn't say Stingray on it. Then again some people put Stingray badges on their 77 to 82 or there 68, so that kind of makes them a Stingray, even though they are not a Stingray. But no 68 to 82 is a Sting Ray. But hey, they are all Corvettes right?

Chevrolet disagrees with all of you on this one.

Chevrolet called the coupe in 1968 a "Sting Ray", even though it was never badged that way.

From the first line of the first page, of the 1968 Corvette sales brochure: "The Corvette Sting Ray is for those who appreciate the true sports kind of car....."

Further on: "For 1968, the mechanics of the Sting Ray...", "Consider: the '68 Sting Ray Coupe is a hardtop and more.", and "Corvette Sting Ray Coupe...a driving new design.".

On page 4 the 68 convertible is covered. From the first line of the convertible section of the brochure: "The Corvette Convertible takes the same Sting Ray idea with the lid off and turns in top-down driving for two."

The brochure refers to the 68 as a Sting Ray, in a couple other spots too.

Strangely, even though the 69 has "Stingray" badges on the fenders, the only place the 69 brochure ever uses the name Stingray, is in the caption for the back cover picture. It does not appear anywhere in the copy. Chevrolet does refer to the Corvette as a Stingray in the 69 "Chevrolet Sports Department" brochure though.

After 1976, neither name, Sting Ray or Stingray, appear in Corvette brochures.:thumbs:

If you believe that the same generation of car is all the same with or without the need for a badge to be placed on the fender then yes. If you believe that a $5 piece of metal script taken off the car changes it then no.

It wasn't like Z06 or Grand Sport or any other name that identified the car as something different. When the badge was put on, it was put on all of them during the years that it was used. So, if you want to call it a stingray then call it one.

Vettebuyer, I just have to ask.....it seems that you really dislike it when people use the term vette talking about their cars instead of corvette. Why does that phrase irritate you so much when it is used in your name?

My take is who really cares.... BUT personally the 68 s were NOT Stingrays nor are any Corvette produced since the 77 Model Year Stingrays...

Any you can bet your last dollar that I point out the different spelling between my mid year and my 72 and 76...plus point out my 79 is not a stingray ...no need to point out my C4 or C5 is also not labeled with either term ...

If you own a 78 and want to call it a Stingray that is fine with me...

a lot of people call my car [1982]a stingray .they do not know the differant years and i am not going to correct every person .c3 all came from the same place ,call it what you will .

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? This reminds me of the debate among the Mustang crowd over whether the Mustangs built from the introduction in April of 1964 to the traditional begining of the 65 model year in September of 1964 were 64 1/2 Mustangs. If you want em to be, I guess they are. Like Chevrolet calling the unbadged 68 model a "Sting Ray" in its publications, Ford always called the early Mustangs the "New 1965 Mustang" in all their advertising. I think I'll go with the manufacturer in both cases.

I quit correcting people when they said "Nice Stingray". Simply because it is easier that way. Telling them the entire thing about year models and C123456.....well its just easier to say...Thanks, its an 81...and leave it at that. So yes to the unknowing public C3's are all Stingrays.

Question, would you prefer someone to say "nice Corvette" over "nice Stingray" or does that matter to you?

I'll answer this for Vettebuyer. He is not talking about the word Vette. He is referring to the location of the '. It should be before the 78, as in '78 to indicate that something is omitted there - the 19. Putting it after the number is an abbreviation for foot or feet (distance).
