This is what we have the original carburetor that my brother has taken too two
shops for rebuild, one is saying it it worn out can't be rebuilt or restored' the other
did rebuild it but it just not working right he is telling us we need a plate under the
carb is this right. I think we need to find someone that really knows what their doing, this carb. has 78000mi on it.

I would recommend you deal with Chicago Corvette only if needed (nobody else has the part, etc.), and with the understanding that credit card refunds take 90+ days (error was their fault and done in the store same day - not mail order!). That won't happen again!

Also, screwed me on a "Will Call" order (said they had part and would hold, drove in to find it was shipped out to someone else!). This of course, was back when I lived in the Chicago area.

I am not sure if they still restamp carbs or not. but they were known to take a very common found carb and restamp it to a very desirable carb

Be very, very, very cautious. Their reputation is well known and it's not very good.

Avoid them as much as possible.

I ordered a generator that was "in stock" in early December 2010 and did not get it until Feb. Ever week there was another excuse why it did not ship, and in some cases their excuses contradicted previous excuses. I finally issued a paypal dispute and received it 5 days later.

The unit I finally received was very nice, but honestly not work the aggravation.

Do a search on the NCRS board and you will see many similar issues.

Had a 3461S rebuilt by Al Fierke- I think he is over the carb dept. Took a little while, but was well pleased with the quality of the work. He even had to heliarc in the idle stop which had been broken off in a wreck back in 66. Almost invisible repair. He did me right.

Had them restore my dual 4's. Very pleased with results

I bought and intake manifold and half a dozen NOS parts on eBay from them. No issues at all, everything met or exceeded expectations. From what I have read over the last year, I am in the minority though.

I asked same question months back , and a few forum members did say stay away ! followed there advise ! in the end I bought a few ebay wcfb carbs ended up having middlesex custom carb go over them a additional $500 / turns out they do most of chicagocorvette .net rebuilds . now all along there was a set of 2x4 FS from that seller , the ones i steered clear off , i do know of a forum memeber that did just buy those carbs and was very happy with his purchase , so take a chance get the carb !

Also any good Corvette shops in San Diego that can get this carb right.

Zero customer service assuming you are lucky enough to actually reach them. Famous for their re-stamps, lots of bad juju. Unless your house is on fire and they are the last place on earth to get water from.....well as others have said, my last choice for sure. As far as repairing a carb, they DON'T do a thing in house. The AFB is supposed to have 2 plates under the carb, an insulator, and an aluminum plate as well :smash:

:iagree:

You been advised

Check the parts for sale archieves. I have seen a 63 auto carb unrestored advertised twice, I believe the same carb, in the past six months. From appearance it looks like a nice carb to have restored. There are several quality carb rebuilders if you purchase one needing rebuilt, which most will.

Best of luck,
Rick

On point with your carb problem, what are the symptoms? There is not much to wear out internally that can't be fixed. The biggest problem on these older AFB's is that the throttle shafts wear and produce leaks. That also can be fixed (they re bush them). Looks like you have a nice carb there, I would bet that a GOOD carb shop that is familiar with these AFB's could fix it. :smash: Pilot Dan

The closest shop to you that I know that has an excellent reputation for carb rebuilding is Chuck Smith. See link: http://www.chucksmithandco.com/

I would contact him for a quality rebuild. There are other shops as well with excellent reputations......but they are farther away. You can find these names, etc by searching the archives or FAQ Section.....or just ask.

This should not be a difficult problem to correct.

There is a guy named Bob in St Louis area that is really good, he is in HEMMINGS under Corvette Parts.... I know several people who have used him and were very satisfied with results.
