THIS is why you mock up b4 you coat aftermarket headers
I bolted up the headers today, used Hookers that came with the car. They fit good with the Dart Pro 1 heads-just couple trouble spots, one is by the steering linkage which the primary had to be "persuaded" a bit and another issue is with the #4 spark plug, it's too close to the primary and needs to be clearanced. I will have both these spots cut out and welded in smooth bends before I bring the headers and side pipes to be coated.
This is why you do mock up "B4" you coat, hehe http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN0604.jpg http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN0612.jpg |
That's actually pretty good compared to how my Hookers fit with the angle plug AFR's. Very smart to take the time and effort before sending them out :yesnod:
Here is my #4 after being "clearanced" http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/p...Picture076.jpg |
You need exhaust studs with aluminum heads
|
Thx guys. I was looking at those exhaust studs in Smokedtires pics. I will get them thx.

Why studs iso header bolts?
|
I assume so you don't strip out the threads in the heads.

How come??
2. Ease of remove and replace headers. Just hang the gasket and slap on the headers. 3. 1 3/4 inch pips are very close to the bolt head and these little 5/16th ARP nuts give clearance. 4. They never back off our get loose. 5. Because I said so! http://www.corvetteforum.net/c3/gkull/516nut.jpg http://www.corvetteforum.net/c3/gkull/eport.jpg http://www.corvetteforum.net/c3/gkull/motorside.jpg http://www.corvetteforum.net/c3/gkull/ready1.jpg |

http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN0604.jpg IMO, you've got adequate room to the #4 spark plug. |
No need to cut and weld
Get a large socket, like over an inch. Big. Toss a towel maybe with a fold or so on the tube Lay the socket on its side With dead blow hammer or something similar strike the socket at a very slight angle, it will slightly flatten the area without bashing it making a clean job out of it and no chips in your coating. |

Don't they also make shorty header plugs ? I'd happily trade my BB headers for a pair of 69 stock manifolds, any takers ?
