C2 Dx Car beat two C3 Cars at Daytona 1968

I don't have any info on this, or have I found any real hour by hour on this--- any theories or info? Was it weight, was it driver's, were there mechanical problems?- I do believe one of the C3 cars had problems. I would think that this did not turn out as planned! It is also quicker to ask knowledgable forum members to settle a discussion that I had with a family member pertaining to the superiority of one model or another. I think that both models have there advantages/disadvantages. Thanks!

I would guess that it was mainly because the 67 had been racing for a year, and as such, was fully sorted out. The 68's were brand new race cars, I think the 24 hour was their first race.

The DX 67 out qualified the 2 DX 68's, but the DX 67 was out qualified by both of the James Garner American International Racing Team, 68 Corvettes. So the 67 DX car may have been faster than it's 2 team cars, but it wasn't inherently faster than a 68 L-88.

The 67 won the GT class, and completed 586 laps. The Revson/Yenko 68 completed only 496 laps and the Thompson/DeLorenzo car completed even fewer laps (430). One of the American International cars finished, but only ran 373 laps, while the second AIR car retired on lap 262 with an engine failure. It's obvious from the laps completed, that the 68's must have all suffered some kind of mechanical problems, during the race.

Mechanically, the 67 and 68 L-88's are basically identical. The only variable would be aerodynamics and preparation. I don't think that there's any question as to the 68 being better aero wise, especially at high speed, so the difference had to be preparation. This is not to say that the 68's weren't as well prepared. All 4 68's (the 2 DX cars & the 2 AIR cars) were brand new race cars, in their first race, while the 67 had a year of racing on it.

As is often the case in racing, luck may have had something to do with it too.

Thanks! For the reply!

With the completed lap count, I assume mechanical problems. I didn't know that the 67 out qualified the 68. Now that is interesting!

Cool Picture, what race was that?

I know that car was built by Yenko Chevrolet to compete in FIA. But the car got flared, the grill modification is interesting basically just cutting a bigger hole to exhaust heat. The factory supplied L-88 headers are present, the brake cooling looks something like a mod from IMSA or Can Am racing (radical), the true magnesium rims, etc.. They were going for it! And I am sure that there was alot more under the skin.
Another interesting car was the Phil Currin C2 #99 that took the 1972 Imsa Championship. I know at that time, the IMSA was running mostly production based cars and the radical stuff started in about late 1974.
